Chubb vs Coalition

Compare Chubb DigiTech ERM and Coalition Tech E&O for a hardware business with digital and physical operations.

Introduction

A hardware startup can have a software outage, damaged stock and employee exposures in the same operating plan. Chubb’s technology practice lists both digital-risk insurance and property and casualty products; Coalition’s combined Tech E&O and cyber offering addresses a defined digital-risk purchase. Compare these proposals at two levels: the technology policy itself and the additional placements needed for physical operations. 4 44

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Coalition Shines

  • Combines Tech E&O and cyber coverage for technology businesses. 44
  • Control provides policyholders with monitoring, alerts and remediation guidance. 51

Key Differences Between Chubb and Coalition

DigiTech Is the Relevant Product Comparison

For technology companies, Chubb markets DigiTech Enterprise Risk Management as a single policy addressing technology errors and omissions, media and cyber exposures, alongside Cyber ERM for cyber, privacy and media and Pro ERM for professional, media and cyber. Actual terms, limits and exclusions are in the issued form. 10,9,4

Chubb separately markets Cyber ERM and Pro ERM. For a company selling technology, ask why the broker selected a particular form instead of treating those names as substitutes. Coalition’s combined offering likewise needs an insured-services description that matches what the company sells. An application describing only software may not be the right factual submission for a business also supplying devices; give both brokers the complete activity description. 10 44 55

More Lines Under One Brand Still Means More Policy Decisions

Chubb lists property packages, workers’ compensation, auto and umbrella for technology companies, with separate cargo and equipment-breakdown products elsewhere in its catalogue. Those offerings make program coordination a concrete discussion, but do not establish that every line is available to this applicant or included in DigiTech. A Coalition technology proposal can instead be evaluated as one placement within the company’s wider insurance program; its documented excess option is cyber and combined technology liability, not evidence of a general casualty umbrella. 4 24 23 57

Service Depends on the Selected Product and Account

Chubb describes agent-led service, technology risk engineering and separate tools for small-commercial and multinational accounts. Coalition’s Control services focus on security monitoring and remediation. Ask for the services included in the actual proposal; a large-account portal or engineering capability advertised elsewhere is not a commitment to a startup account. 30 4 27 51

What to Confirm in Quotes

Submit a schedule of hardware, software, outsourced manufacturing and shipment activities. Ask which form addresses each activity, where separate policies are proposed, and how limits or exclusions interact. Identify the legal insurer on every quote: Chubb’s California insurer authorizations do not prove product eligibility, and Coalition’s admitted cyber company is not automatically the issuer of a California Tech E&O policy. Obtain account-specific service and incident-reporting contacts with the proposal. 36 2 54 52

Service Comparison

Chubb vs Coalition: documented services and availability

CriteriaChubbCoalition
Business role

Chubb is the marketing name for subsidiaries of Chubb Limited, a Swiss holding company, that provide insurance and related services. U.S. commercial policies are issued by U.S.-based Chubb underwriting companies, not by Chubb Limited itself. 39,2,25

Commercial buyers typically reach Chubb through independent agents and brokers. Chubb appoints producers, operates agent portals, and identifies Chubb Insurance Solutions Agency, Inc. as the licensed agency that administers Chubb Access appointments. Surplus-lines products can be offered only through licensed surplus-lines producers. 29,30,2,38

Coalition combines commercial insurance offerings with cyber risk-management services. In the United States, Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CIS) is the disclosed insurance producer and surplus lines broker; the issuing insurer is responsible for policy obligations. 45,50

Coalition lists CIS’s California producer and surplus lines license as 0L76155. This is a company disclosure; current license status has not been independently checked with the California regulator. 45

Coalition’s legal page identifies Coalition Incident Response, Inc., doing business as Coalition Security, or independent third parties as security-service providers. Coalition Security does not provide insurance. 45

Access to insurers

The issuing insurer is a Chubb-group underwriting company named on the policy. Reviewed sources identify Federal Insurance Company as a primary U.S. underwriting company, ACE American Insurance Company as a U.S. issuing company on surety materials, and Westchester Fire Insurance Company or Westchester Surplus Lines Insurance Company (and, for some Westchester business, Illinois Union or other ACE paper) depending on the placement. Buyers should read the declarations rather than assume a single “Chubb” legal insurer. 30,25,28,36,41

Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 46,45

Application process

Appointed agents and brokers can quote, and for eligible risks issue, small-business and cyber accounts through Chubb Marketplace, and can use Cyber Central for an express cyber quoting path. Marketplace cyber quoting is described for eligible risks with less than $100 million in revenue; referred risks go to underwriters. Businesses seeking coverage are directed to an agent, a U.S. contact form, or chubbsmallbusiness.com for small-business quote inquiries. The reviewed public pages do not describe a general-public online bind for middle-market technology programs. 9,10,30,31,12

Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 56

Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 55

Servicing and renewals

Chubb tells buyers to use their agent or broker as the first service contact and publishes Small Business policy-service, billing and client-center support for policies purchased through Chubb Small Business or named affinity partners. Lower-midmarket materials describe a path from quoting and issuance through servicing and renewals. Large multinational accounts are offered Worldview for program documents, certificates and claims status. Technology marketing also describes dedicated underwriting, claims and risk-engineering teams, including nearly 500 in-house risk engineers in related consulting copy. 30,19,27,4,18

Coalition describes Control policyholder features at no additional cost, including attack-surface monitoring, vendor-risk monitoring, vulnerability alerts and guidance. Login Security requires connecting a Microsoft or Google environment. Additional security products are promoted separately. 51

Coalition says cyber renewals begin 90 days before expiration and follow Automatic, Express or Standard paths based on the account. Express renewals require responses; Standard renewals require a bind order and updated signed application, with additional underwriting conditions for some accounts. Automatic renewal does not guarantee an unchanged premium. 58

Claims assistance

Chubb publishes 24/7 claim reporting at 1-800-CLAIMS-0, product-specific first-notice emails including cyberclaimreport@chubb.com and a 24/7 cyber incident hotline at 1-800-817-2665, plus a Small Commercial client portal for eligible policyholders to report claims and upload documents. Claims-page satisfaction figures are company-reported survey results and do not independently establish claims-handling quality for a given loss. 32,33,34,9,30

Coalition describes in-house cyber claims triage and assistance attempting to recover stolen funds. Its Tech E&O page says the same claims team manages cyber and Tech E&O claims. These service descriptions do not establish response quality or payment of a particular loss. 52,44
