Insurance for a Government Contract

Meet the insurance and bonding terms of a government contract

Send us the solicitation, and your Spot team sorts its insurance and bond requirements into what you carry, what you need and what to ask the contracting officer.

  • Insurance and bond requirements pulled from the solicitation
  • Bond submissions prepared for the surety
  • Keep your broker or switch, with no commissions on premiums

We separate insurance from bonds

Your Spot team lists each required policy and limit apart from each bond, because a bond guarantees your obligation to the agency rather than insuring your business.

When you need insurance

You’re bidding on a public contract, and the solicitation lists insurance and bond requirements you have to meet before award.

Coverage to consider

  • Surety bonds

Public work often calls for bid, performance or payment bonds. Each guarantees a different obligation, and the solicitation sets the form and amount.

  • General liability

Solicitations commonly list it for injury or property damage arising from your work, often with the agency added as an additional insured.

    Get quotes
  • Workers’ compensation

The contract can require it for everyone working on the job, and your state’s rules may already require it.

    Get quotes
  • Commercial auto

If you drive to sites or move equipment in company vehicles, the contract may set auto liability limits.

  • Professional errors and omissions (E&O)

Consulting, design and other service contracts can require cover for claims that your advice or work caused the agency a loss.

  • Umbrella and excess liability

When required limits exceed your primary policies, an extra layer can add limits above the policies listed underneath it.

Common questions

Is a surety bond the same as insurance?

No. A bond protects the agency by guaranteeing that you’ll meet an obligation you owe it. It doesn’t replace your own liability or property insurance.

Who should I ask about the bond requirements for a federal construction project?

Check the solicitation and confirm the bonding requirements with the contracting officer before arranging performance or payment bonds. Spot helps you prepare once the requirement is clear.

Can the agency be added as an additional insured?

Usually, by endorsement. A certificate on its own adds nobody to your policy, so your Spot team requests the endorsement through your broker and insurer.

Does Spot work with my current broker?

Yes, and Spot takes no commissions on premiums. If your broker doesn’t place bonds, we can introduce one who does.
