Idaho Crime Insurance Guide

If your Idaho business lets employees or contractors endorse, prepare, or process checks, map that authority before choosing crime limits: Idaho law includes retained contractors in a rule about certain fraudulent indorsements. The state also requires prompt review of bank statements for unauthorized signatures or alterations and sets a one-year outside limit for raising those issues with a bank. Those banking rules do not determine policy coverage, so compare check-related and electronic-transfer terms separately. 1,2

What Is Crime?

Crime insurance can help reimburse specified business losses from theft and fraud, including employee theft and forgery. Compare those protections separately and ask whether a payment sent after an impersonation scam is covered. Read the national Crime guide.

What to Watch for in Idaho

  • Count outsourced check handling in your exposure review

Idaho Code § 28-3-405 includes a retained independent contractor and an employee of that contractor in its definition of employee for the section. The statute focuses on responsibility with an instrument, such as processing deposits or preparing checks, not mere access to stored check forms. Ask how the policy defines employee and whether your bookkeeping or payroll arrangement changes the quoted terms. 1

  • Assign someone to examine statements promptly

Under Idaho Code § 28-4-406, a customer must act with reasonable promptness to examine paid items and promptly notify the bank after discovering an unauthorized signature or alteration. The statute also sets a one-year limit for reporting such items to the bank, regardless of care. Set a named owner and regular reconciliation schedule; this bank-rights deadline is separate from notice requirements in an insurance policy. 2

  • Ask separately about a wire sent after deception

A spoofed vendor email may lead an employee to authorize a real transfer to the wrong recipient. The FBI describes this as business-email compromise and urges immediate contact with both financial institutions through the originating bank. Ask whether the quote covers that scenario under social-engineering or funds-transfer language; do not assume a check-forgery clause answers it. 3

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office

Reported tax rate: 1.5% of premium when Idaho is the home state for property and casualty coverage Idaho’s surplus-lines tax is 1.5%. For property-and-casualty insurance other than workers’ compensation, if Idaho is the insured’s home state the full premium is taxed regardless of where covered risks are located; other lines follow the statutory allocation rule. Surplus-lines policies do not receive Idaho guaranty-association protection. 6,7,9

Providers With Documented State Licenses

These providers publish a national listing for Crime; the state records document licenses for the entities and roles shown below. Some records rely on company-reported information rather than independent regulator verification. A national listing does not confirm the product is available in Idaho. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm state availability for your business when requesting a quote.

  • VouchVouch Specialty Insurance Services, LLCInsurance producer · checked 2026-09-28Vouch’s licenses page, effective January 16, 2025, lists producer licenses in all 50 states and DC. The page is company-reported and does not establish product availability. 16

Crime in Idaho: FAQ

Does Idaho’s one-year bank rule give a business one year to notify its crime insurer? 2

No. Idaho Code § 28-4-406 addresses claims against a bank for unauthorized signatures or alterations. Check the policy for its separate notice requirements and report a suspected loss promptly. 2

Are independent contractors relevant to Idaho’s employee-check rule? 1

Yes. Section 28-3-405 includes a retained independent contractor in its employee definition for that section’s rule on fraudulent indorsements. It does not establish that a particular insurance policy covers a contractor’s conduct. 1
