StartupInsurance.ai vs The Hartford

How ContractorNerd’s StartupInsurance.ai agency, which names Hartford on its homepage panel, differs from buying The Hartford direct.

Introduction

If the homepage names Hartford, Chubb, Coalition, Tokio Marine HCC, Travelers and CNA, the buyer question is whether ContractorNerd will actually submit your file to Hartford or to someone else. The brand StartupInsurance.ai does not underwrite. ContractorNerd relationship is the operating agency. 1 10

Where Each Provider Shines

Where StartupInsurance.ai Shines

  • Free policy and contract review, with a company-stated 48-hour assessment. 2
  • Advertises physical-risk placements alongside startup liability coverage. 1

Where The Hartford Shines

  • The Hartford designs small-business packages for SaaS and other software companies, typically starting from a business owner’s policy. 7,8,30,29
  • Small-business buyers can start an online quote-and-buy flow or call, or use an independent Hartford agent; commercial auto is not sold on that self-serve path. 8,7,14,13,23,25

Key Differences Between StartupInsurance.ai and the Hartford

Marketing Brand Versus Writing Companies

Quotes, binding and transactions are assigned to ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. Terms allow submissions through partners. California P&C license 6015566 is company-reported as active. 4 5

Hartford subsidiaries issue Hartford policies. You can skip ContractorNerd and quote at The Hartford. 14

Startup Menu Versus Hartford Packaging

The startup catalogue lists GL, tech E&O, professional liability, cyber, D&O, EPL, fiduciary, crime, WC and umbrella. Hartford documents those families with different packaging (BOP, FailSafe, Private Choice Premier) and California built-in EPL limits. Logo walls do not choose the form. 1 22

Compensation

ContractorNerd discloses producer compensation on a dedicated page. Hartford discloses producer commissions. If ContractorNerd places Hartford, both apply. 6 31

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Issuing insurer on the ContractorNerd proposal—Hartford Fire or another logo. 1
  • Which licensed entity binds if a partner is used. 5
  • California EPL if Hartford BOP is the vehicle. 22

Service Comparison

StartupInsurance.ai vs The Hartford: documented services and availability

CriteriaStartupInsurance.aiThe Hartford
Business role

StartupInsurance.ai identifies itself as a marketing brand of ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. ContractorNerd describes its role as an insurance agent or broker, not an insurer; it does not underwrite the policies. 2,5

ContractorNerd’s licensing page assigns quotes, binding and insurance transactions to ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC, with servicing supported by its licensed agents and partners. Its terms allow submissions through insurers and intermediaries. Confirm the producer-of-record arrangement for your StartupInsurance.ai placement. 4,5

The Hartford is the brand of The Hartford Insurance Group, Inc., a financial holding company whose subsidiaries underwrite property-and-casualty insurance, employee benefits and other financial products. Independent agents and brokers, and Hartford employees who sell insurance, distribute those products. The brand is not itself the insurer on a policy. 10,31,27,13

Coverage lines

The startup catalogue lists general liability, technology E&O, professional liability, cyber, D&O, employment practices, fiduciary, crime, workers’ compensation, and umbrella/excess. 1

Its physical-risk catalogue lists product liability, inland marine, tools/equipment, commercial auto, builders risk, surety and property. These are advertised placement categories, not guaranteed eligibility. 1

StartupInsurance.ai also advertises access to AI-failure coverage. The reviewed page does not identify its issuer, form or California eligibility; this does not establish that an ordinary cyber or E&O policy includes it. 1

Documented Hartford offerings for businesses include a business owner’s policy (general liability, commercial property and business income), stand-alone general liability and commercial property, workers’ compensation, cyber (including BOP data-breach add-ons, CyberChoice First Response and FailSafe Technology E&O), miscellaneous professional liability, employment practices liability, commercial auto and hired/non-owned auto, management-liability packages (Private Choice Premier: directors and officers, EPL, fiduciary, crime, kidnap and ransom), commercial umbrella, employee benefits, and inland marine for midsize and large accounts. Actual forms, limits and availability vary by product, state and underwriting. 7,15,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,27,30,29

The Hartford’s employment-practices page states there is no built-in EPL coverage in California, Minnesota, North Dakota or New York, and that the EPL program described on that page does not apply to EPL coverage written in California. Coverages also vary by state and class. 22

Availability

ContractorNerd reports California property-and-casualty license 6015566 as active and says it is licensed in all 50 states. This is the agency’s own disclosure, not an independently verified regulator result. StartupInsurance.ai says availability varies by state, carrier and risk, with some surplus-lines placements; the reviewed sources do not establish a California route for every advertised product. 4,2

The Hartford states that products are not available in all states or for all businesses, and that listing a writing company as authorized to transact insurance does not guarantee that coverage will be offered. Workers’ compensation pages also say that in some states coverage can be bought only from a state-run program, not from a private insurer such as The Hartford. 8,10,18,15

The Hartford operates a California small-business insurance page that lists BOP, general liability, workers’ compensation, commercial auto, commercial property and professional liability and says California buyers can get a quote online or by phone. Hartford Fire Insurance Company is independently listed by the California Department of Insurance as an authorized property-and-casualty insurer (NAIC 19682). Those facts do not identify which affiliate would issue a particular California policy or whether a given SaaS risk will be accepted. 9,34,10

Application process

The online intake starts with coverage choices and shows subsequent sections for company details, financials, employees, claims, existing insurance and signature. Its initial choices are D&O, cyber, technology E&O, employment practices, fiduciary, crime and general liability. Only the public starting screen was inspected; quote delivery and binding were not tested. 3

The Hartford says eligible small-business buyers can get a free quote online in minutes or by phone, and can also buy through independent agents. Its public quote-and-buy portal shows steps from Basics through Payment and Confirmation. It also says buyers can purchase without an agent. Commercial auto for small businesses is not currently offered on that online path and may be quoted through a local agency or Tivly. Management-liability pages direct buyers to find a local agent. 8,7,14,13,23,25

Fees and compensation

ContractorNerd discloses possible insurer/intermediary commissions, buyer-paid fees and contingent compensation. Fees can include platform, technology, policy-handling or consulting charges; not every charge applies to every policy. It says applicable fees are disclosed before binding or agreed before charging. A technology access fee, if charged, is generally non-refundable under its stated terms. Request the agreement and amounts applicable to your StartupInsurance.ai quote; the free review is not a promise of fee-free placement. 6

The Hartford discloses that it pays independent producers base commissions (a percentage of premium or a fixed amount per policy), and may also pay contingent or supplemental commissions, fees for services, delegated-underwriting compensation and other benefits. Employees who sell insurance may receive extra compensation beyond salary. Producers may charge their own customer fees that are not Hartford premium. The reviewed pages do not publish the commission rate or any Hartford-charged service fee that would apply to a particular buyer’s policy. Published “average premiums” are company-reported estimates, not quotes. 31,13,8,7
