Pie Insurance vs USI Insurance Services

Why Pie’s workers’ compensation carrier platform is not a stand-in for USI’s multi-line technology brokerage.

Introduction

Payroll-driven workers’ compensation is often the first statutory buy; it is rarely the whole technology program. Pie’s core documented product is workers’ compensation written by Pie carriers, with business owner’s policy, general liability, professional, and cyber through other markets and commercial auto discontinued for new business. USI can broker workers’ compensation as one line beside directors and officers, cargo, and PrivaSafe. Pie does not replace that brokerage program, and USI does not replace Pie’s workers’ compensation claims and audit machinery unless a USI proposal actually places you with Pie or another workers’ compensation market. 3 34

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Pie Insurance Shines

  • Small businesses can start a workers’ compensation quote directly online or through an insurance agent. 2,1,3
  • Workers’ compensation payment options include pay-as-you-go using reported payroll, with no initial deposit. 17,18

Where USI Insurance Services Shines

  • USI’s Technology practice says it works with software, hardware and related companies from early seed stage through IPO. 27,35,46
  • USI says it is customarily paid insurer commissions and may receive additional contingent compensation, with details available on request. 33

Key Differences Between Pie Insurance and USI

Carrier Group Versus Producer

Pie Insurance Services sells and administers; Pie carriers underwrite workers’ compensation. USI obtains coverage from insurers it does not name publicly. Hiring USI as broker does not make USI your workers’ compensation insurer. 2 33

Line Mix and Auto Exit

If you still need commercial auto after Pie’s 2026 cutoff, that line has to come from somewhere else. USI lists auto liability as a property-casualty advice area, which is not a promise of a market. Pie’s partner business owner’s policy, general liability, errors and omissions, and cyber pages do not publish a full state table. 14 34

Where WC Is Even Offered

Pie’s workers’ compensation footprint is a 39- versus 40-state conflict in its own materials; confirm California (or any state) explicitly. USI’s “every state” office claim is not a workers’ compensation filing map. 11 29

Claims and Audit

Pie tells you to report workplace injury within 24 hours through its own channels and runs payroll audits. USI’s kit says report workers’ compensation to the insurance company directly. If a USI proposal places Pie, you may still use Pie’s 24-hour intake; if it places another carrier, Pie’s phone number does not apply. 20 44

Cost Mechanics

Pie publishes pay-as-you-go and a 3% card fee with state exceptions. USI publishes producer commission rules, not WC rates. Compare estimated payroll, class codes, and deposit—not website slogans. 18 33

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Whether USI would place workers’ compensation with Pie or another carrier, and who receives the first notice of injury. 20 44
  • California (or headquarters state) eligibility on Pie’s workers’ compensation list versus USI’s proposed market. 11
  • How directors and officers, errors and omissions, and cargo will be placed if Pie is workers’ compensation only. 35
  • Auto replacement market after Pie’s commercial-auto discontinuation. 14

Service Comparison

Pie Insurance vs USI: documented services and availability

CriteriaPie InsuranceUSI Insurance Services
Business role

Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 2,5,3,7,8,9,10

Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 4,24,22

Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 5,25

USI describes itself as a U.S. insurance brokerage and consulting firm that arranges property and casualty, employee benefits, personal risk, program, and retirement solutions. The reviewed official pages do not identify USI as the insurer that issues commercial policies. 27,26,33,46

USI’s commissions page states that, as a licensed insurance producer, it may advise on insurance contracts, sell insurance, and obtain coverages for clients. Privacy and staff materials identify the operating company as USI Insurance Services LLC. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. 33,32,47

On 31 August 2026, Aon plc announced a definitive agreement to acquire USI from KKR and other shareholders for a $17.0 billion purchase price, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals. Aon stated that Aon and USI will continue to operate independently until the closing date. The reviewed announcement does not establish that the transaction has closed. 46

Coverage lines

Current direct offering pages support workers’ compensation, business owner’s policy, cyber, general liability and professional liability/E&O. The non-workers’ compensation pages describe typical protection; the issued policy and endorsements determine actual coverage. 3,7,8,10,9,4

Pie says it stopped accepting commercial-auto submissions on December 1, 2025 and will issue no new or renewal commercial-auto policies on or after January 1, 2026. Existing policyholders retain coverage through their policy term and can still use Pie’s claim channels. 14,20

Pie’s terms say website coverage descriptions are not part of an insurance contract and do not change a policy or endorsement; eligibility and product availability can vary by geography and applicant. 4

USI’s Technology practice lists insurance placement for property; business income and contingent business income; worldwide cargo and stock; errors and omissions; product liability; directors and officers liability; network security / USI PrivaSafe; and international. Those labels describe brokerage services. Limits, exclusions, insurer, and whether a given startup qualifies remain in a quote and policy. 35,40

USI’s commercial property and casualty pages describe advice and placement on workers’ compensation, property, general liability, auto liability, umbrella/excess, executive and professional risks, cyber, environmental, product liability, and related claims and risk-control services. Other industry pages add employment practices, crime, fiduciary, professional E&O, kidnap and ransom, representations and warranties, medical professional (malpractice) liability, and required bonding in the healthcare practice. Availability and wording vary by client, insurer, and jurisdiction. 34,36,37,38,42

USI’s employee-benefits practice describes consulting to design, price, and administer employer benefit programs, including underwriting analytics, HR administration support, population health, compliance/healthcare reform guidance, pharmacy and ancillary consulting. The private-equity practice separately lists employee health and welfare insurance services after a transaction. These pages describe consulting and placement services, not a specific insured health plan or carrier. 39,37

Availability

Pie’s dedicated state page and AM Best describe workers’ compensation in 40 states and Washington, D.C., but Pie’s homepage and January 2026 release say 39 states plus D.C. Confirm the business locations and class codes in the current quote or agent portal. 11,12,1,13,22

The reviewed BOP, cyber, general-liability and professional-liability pages do not publish a product-by-state availability table. Pie’s terms also say products are not available in every US area or situation. 7,8,10,9,4

USI states that it is headquartered at 100 Summit Lake Drive, Suite 400, Valhalla, New York, with more than 10,000 professionals across over 200 U.S. offices, and that it serves every state. That is a company description of its office network and service footprint. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular commercial product is admitted, surplus-lines, or otherwise available in California or any other named state. 29,27,30,26

A USI Insurance Services LLC staff biography lists a San Francisco office and prints CA DOI License # 0G11911. The reviewed usi.com practice pages do not state which commercial products are available to California-domiciled startups, whether placements are admitted or surplus lines, or which licensed entity would appear on a California policy. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. A California office address is not treated as product eligibility. 47,35,34,29

Claims assistance

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 20

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 21,11,22

USI’s contact page tells people seeking claims assistance to contact the appropriate USI office. A May 2021 claims kit instructs clients to report property, workers’ compensation, general liability, and commercial auto claims to the insurance company, and to involve the USI account team or claims consultant for environmental, executive/management liability, professional liability/E&O, and cyber. Natural-disaster guidance likewise points commercial P&C clients to their claims representative or client service team. The materials describe reporting assistance, not claims-handling quality or authority to settle. 30,44,45,34

Fees and compensation

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 17,18

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 17

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 16

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 21,5

Unless otherwise negotiated, USI says compensation for placing coverage is customarily a commission calculated as a percentage of premium and paid by the insurer. It may also receive additional monetary and non-monetary compensation from insurers or intermediaries (including affiliates), which can be contingent on volume, profitability, or other factors, and some agreements include growth or distribution incentives. Clients may request the nature and source of expected compensation, including on alternative quotes. Standard commission percentages and fee schedules for startup accounts are not published. 33
