Founder Shield vs Pie Insurance

How Founder Shield and Pie Insurance address a growing company’s wider insurance program, payroll billing and workers’ compensation administration.

Introduction

Founder Shield arranges insurance programs for growing businesses, including workers’ compensation and management liability. Pie Insurance sells and administers small-business insurance, with workers’ compensation written by affiliated carriers and selected other products placed with partners. They can overlap on the employee-insurance purchase without being interchangeable for every part of the company’s program. 11 1 33 31

Key Differences Between Founder Shield and Pie Insurance

Ownership of the Whole Program

If a venture-backed consumer brand opens a warehouse and hires its first operations team, payroll insurance joins its existing product, cyber and management risks. Founder Shield’s catalogue spans those areas and describes tailoring a program. Pie’s core workers’ compensation path begins with business and payroll information; its broader menu includes business owner’s policies (BOP), general liability, cyber and professional liability through other carriers. Compare a complete proposal before deciding whether to consolidate every line or coordinate separate providers. 11 12 31 33 36

A Pie workers’ compensation quote is not evidence that the investor’s directors and officers (D&O) requirement has been addressed. Conversely, a Founder Shield package is not evidence that every policy must move together. Ask for a written list of included and separately arranged lines, and name the person who reviews new warehouse activities across them. Pie supports both direct buyers and agents, so an advisor can remain involved where the agency has the necessary access; these sources do not establish a specific Founder Shield appointment with Pie. 13 12 30

Payroll-Based Billing and Premium Financing

Pie describes pay-as-you-go payments based on reported payroll, with no initial deposit. Founder Shield’s general pricing FAQ describes full payment, carrier installments and third-party premium financing. For the warehouse’s uncertain hiring schedule, ask whether the offered workers’ compensation policy can adjust payments with payroll and what reporting is required. Do not assume that an installment plan tracks staffing simply because payments are monthly. 46 22

Pie’s annual audit uses actual payroll and asks for employee duties, expenses and subcontractor certificates. That makes payroll quality part of the purchasing decision: someone must supply accurate information during the term and retain records for reconciliation. Pay-as-you-go does not establish that no final adjustment is possible. Ask Founder Shield who provides equivalent audit support for the insurer it proposes; its general financing description does not answer that policy-specific question. 47 46 22

Request the total payment cost as well as the premium basis. Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island; that disclosure does not describe the fee for multi-state or renewal policies. Pie also charges for waiver requests; Founder Shield discloses commissions, fees and possible financing-related compensation. Compare annual cost, expected reporting work and contractual charges using the same payroll and job classifications. No public benchmark establishes the cheaper offer for this business. 45 44 2 23

Locations and Endorsements in the Quote

Pie’s public state counts conflict, while Founder Shield’s terms limit some offerings by jurisdiction. If the warehouse operation expands into another state, obtain acceptance for that location and its actual work rather than relying on either a producer license or a nationwide-sounding description. Pie’s published documents can help locate state materials but do not prove eligibility for every employee classification. 39 29 40 2

Contract paperwork differs by line too. Founder Shield asks for contract requirements when assessing certificate and endorsement needs. Pie’s workers’ compensation FAQ distinguishes a waiver of subrogation from additional-insured status and charges for waiver requests. If a warehouse contract asks the insurer to waive recovery rights, request the applicable endorsement, fee and effective date; a certificate by itself does not perform that change. 18 44

Issuers and Claim Handlers

Pie identifies affiliated workers’ compensation insurers while assigning selected other products to unaffiliated insurers. Founder Shield is a broker whose terms exclude risk-bearing and coverage-determination roles. A group-level brand or rating cannot identify the insurer responsible for covered losses on every policy in either proposed program. Use the declarations and insurer-specific documents. 33 2

Pie documents workplace-injury reporting and state-dependent handling, including CorVel in named states. Founder Shield documents broker advocacy and direct-insurer reporting. For the warehouse, agree who makes the first injury report and who helps with subsequent questions; distinguish the claim administrator from the broker coordinating the wider program. Public assistance descriptions do not establish comparative claim outcomes. 48 49 21

If the business also needs delivery-vehicle coverage, do not use Pie’s navigation as a current offer: its commercial-auto FAQ says it stopped new and renewal business. Arrange that requirement separately and identify who coordinates it with the remaining program. 42 12

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Program ownership: List the workers’ compensation placement, investor and product obligations, any policies staying elsewhere, and the coordinating advisor. 11 33
  • Payroll and audit terms: Obtain accepted classifications, reporting instructions, audit records and the distinction between payroll-based payments and financing. 47 22
  • State and contract approvals: Confirm locations and any waiver endorsement, including its price, instead of relying on a footprint count or certificate. 39 44 18
  • An injury-reporting plan: Name the insurer, state claim handler, first-report recipient and broker advocate. 49 21

Service Comparison

Founder Shield vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaFounder ShieldPie Insurance
Customer focus

Founder Shield focuses on venture-backed and high-growth businesses, from early funding rounds through an initial public offering. Its practices include technology, life sciences, financial services, retail and transportation. 1,6

Pie markets its workers’ compensation program to small businesses, both directly and through local, regional and national insurance agencies. 30,31

Application process

The Get a Quote link opens a portal with Create Account and Sign In options. Registration offers Google, Microsoft, or an email address and password. 7,8

Founder Shield advertises an application that takes under 15 minutes. That is an application-time claim, not a guaranteed time to receive insurer terms or put coverage in force. 6

To buy coverage, Founder Shield’s FAQ says you approve a proposal, select a payment method and choose the desired start date. Its team then follows up on documents needing electronic signatures and handles the insurer’s paperwork. 9

A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 30,29,31

The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 34,31

Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 31,29

Access to insurers

Founder Shield advertises access to more than 200 carriers. Its placement FAQ says it selects markets first by their willingness to insure the industry and risk, then considers growth capacity, service and claims handling. The network size does not establish how many insurers will quote your account. 6,10

The placement FAQ says Founder Shield works exclusively with AM Best A-rated carriers. This is the broker’s stated selection standard; the reviewed sources do not independently establish the current rating of every insurer it uses. 10

Founder Shield identifies itself as the distributor of the AI product and names Testudo as its underwriter. Testudo describes Lloyd’s-backed capacity and says its US entity places insurance without bearing the risk. The insurer or syndicates responsible for a particular quote still need to be identified. 14,16,17

Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 33,50,51,52

AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 50

Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 33,35,36,37,38

Servicing and renewals

Founder Shield’s certificate FAQ directs customers to email the team. For a request tied to a contract, it asks for the other party’s legal name and address, required wording, and the insurance requirements from the contract so the team can assess endorsement needs. 18

Founder Shield asks clients to report changes such as a new product, a different business model, a new office or entry into another territory. Its team says it will evaluate those changes and adjust coverage. 19

Founder Shield describes a platform for applications and renewals, with ongoing advisor support. Its renewal guide suggests starting 60–90 days before expiration and preparing updated business information and claims history. That is planning guidance, not a promised renewal-service deadline. 1,20

Founder Shield’s terms direct cancellation requests to client support and warn that some insurers retain a minimum earned premium—a portion you cannot recover by cancelling early. Check the proposal’s cancellation terms. 2

Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 43,44

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 47

Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 44

Fees and compensation

Founder Shield’s pricing FAQ says quotes generally cover one year, unless stated otherwise, and include the fees and charges for that policy period. It describes full payment, carrier installments and financing through premium-finance companies, depending on the policy and payment arrangement. 22

Founder Shield discloses compensation through commissions, fees or interest and invites questions about the amount and nature of that compensation. Its terms say customer charges will be disclosed in advance. 2

The Baldwin Group’s January 2026 disclosure also describes client fees, commissions tied to volume or profitability, compensation for affiliated placement services, and referral fees from providers such as premium-finance companies. These are possible group arrangements, not a finding that each applies to your Founder Shield policy. 23

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 45,46

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 45

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 44

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 49,33
