Coterie Insurance vs Lockton

Why Coterie’s agent-distributed small-business platform is a different buying path from Lockton’s direct technology brokerage inquiry.

Introduction

Coterie designs bindable small-commercial products for insurance agents, with a business owners policy (BOP) and general-liability core and optional professional lines. Policyholders work through their agent for most coverage questions. 1 6 Lockton markets itself as an independent broker to organizations, including technology companies, and starts U.S. contact with an expert form rather than an agent portal. 24 25 35

A five-person consultancy that already has a retail agent, needs a BOP for an office lease, and is adding software that customers want named on professional and cyber coverage is not choosing two storefronts. Coterie may be the market that agent uses. Lockton is a different retail broker only if you want that firm to shop a broader technology and directors and officers (D&O) program. 2 25

Key Differences Between Coterie and Lockton

Who You Buy Through

Coterie’s documented path is an appointed agent, not a founder checkout equivalent to Lockton’s Ask an Expert form. 5 35 Becoming Lockton’s client is a separate appointment from remaining with the agent who uses Coterie.

What the Core Product Is Built For

Coterie centers on small-business BOP, general liability and professional liability, and notes that workers’ compensation and auto sit outside some claims and product descriptions. 11 Lockton’s technology and casualty pages list D&O, cyber, auto, umbrella, workers’ compensation, property and benefits as brokerage offerings—placement marketing, not a packaged BOP. 25 28 Coterie also documents a one-policy-per-operating-location servicing rule; a second office is a second policy question on that platform. 28

After Bind

Coterie gives policyholders document and certificate tools while routing coverage questions to the agent. Lockton describes a dedicated service team and 24/7 technology servicing language. Neither description is a service-level agreement for this consultancy. 25

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Who is the retail producer on the Coterie policy versus the Lockton engagement letter. 1 36
  • Whether professional and cyber for software is a Coterie endorsement, a separate Coterie professional product, or a Lockton placement. 26
  • Location schedule if you open a second office. 1
  • Workers’ compensation and commercial auto on the actual proposal versus Coterie’s core small-business bind. 11 28

Service Comparison

Coterie vs Lockton: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoterie InsuranceLockton
Business role

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22

Lockton’s US site describes the firm as an independent insurance brokerage that arranges customized risk, employee benefits and retirement solutions. US Terms of Business treat Lockton Companies, LLC and affiliated Lockton companies as intermediaries that market, place and service insurance, not as the risk-bearing insurer on a placed policy. 24,36,43

Public US terms name Lockton Companies, LLC (and Series, subsidiaries and affiliates) as the brokerage group and Lockton, Inc. as the website operator. Certificates produced by Lockton also use the California DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Confirm the legal name on any broker-of-record or services agreement; these pages do not by themselves establish which entity would be appointed for a California company. 36,37,44

Lockton-produced certificates print California license number 0F15767 for Lockton Companies, LLC DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Current license status, classes and expiration remain independently unverified. Treat California producer authority as unresolved until a regulator record or the proposed engagement papers are checked. 44,45

Customer focus

Coterie markets its program for small and micro commercial accounts, including new and home-based businesses, subject to its industry, location and underwriting appetite. 1,5,6

Lockton markets to organizations seeking risk, benefits and retirement brokerage. Its US technology practice says it works with clients in electronic hardware, information technology, internet, medical equipment, semiconductors, software and telecommunications. Separate pages address private-equity firms, including portfolio-company programs. The reviewed pages do not publish a minimum company size, funding stage or revenue floor for technology clients. 24,25,33

Application process

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 35,24,38,26,37

Servicing and renewals

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8

Casualty pages say the same dedicated service team stays with the client through the process. Technology pages describe a round-the-clock service model. Terms of Business cover day-to-day servicing, risk control, insurance renewal services, policy administration and the use of intermediaries (including Lockton affiliates) in servicing and placement. Property pages say the team that meets the client also negotiates with markets rather than a remote broking center. A public client-portal feature list was not established beyond a Lockton Portal login link on the US site. 28,25,36,29,24

Claims assistance

Coterie accepts standard and surplus-lines claim reports online and standard reports by phone. It asks for the policy number, named insured, loss date, event description and carrier name, then assigns a claims representative to investigate under the policy terms. 11,8

Coterie's policyholder page says its team will reach out around two business days after an online claim report, while the claims page says to expect contact within three to five business days. The claims page gives no standard settlement timeline. 10,11

Coterie directs cyber claim reports through its normal intake and says it works with Cyberscout on the investigation. Workplace-violence reports also start with Coterie before a specialty partner handles the response. These service descriptions do not establish that an event is covered. 11,15,16,8

Lockton describes claims advocacy as a service, not as the insurer paying claims. Technology, D&O and fiduciary pages say a Professional & Executive Risk Claims team, including insurance and claims counsel, is integrated with the broking team and that claims advocacy is not treated as a profit center. Loss-prevention pages describe claims consulting: investigations, mapping facts to policies, preparing presentations, and discussions with insurer lawyers and loss adjusters. Workers’ compensation pages mention claims service advocates. Terms of Business include claims handling and claims processing among Lockton’s intermediary services and state Lockton is not responsible for an insurer’s solvency or willingness to pay. These descriptions do not establish claims outcomes or handling quality. 25,27,32,34,30,36
