Coalition vs
Pie Insurance
Compare Pie’s workers’ compensation and partner cyber offerings with Coalition’s cyber and Tech E&O placement.
Introduction
Hiring employees and signing a data-processing contract can trigger two insurance purchases at once. Pie’s core workers’ compensation program concerns payroll and workplace injury; Coalition’s technology and cyber products concern digital and professional exposures. Pie also markets cyber through partners, creating a genuine cyber quote to investigate without making its workers’ compensation terms applicable to that quote. 21 26 1

Key Differences Between Coalition and Pie Insurance
The Carrier Relationship Changes Across Pie’s Products
Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 23,25,26,27,28
Pie’s named affiliated workers’ compensation insurers therefore should not be assumed to issue its cyber policy. Coalition separately identifies admitted cyber through CIC and non-admitted placements through other insurers. For a software company, obtain the actual cyber/E&O form from each route before comparing them; a general E&O category is not proof of equivalent technology coverage. 23 27 3 1
Payroll Flexibility Does Not Establish Cyber Payment Terms
Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 35,36
Pie also requires a workers’ compensation audit reconciling estimated and actual payroll. Those features belong in a hiring-budget comparison, not a cyber-price comparison. Coalition’s public compensation disclosure describes producer payments but does not give a particular startup’s premium or payment-plan cost. Ask for separate invoices and assumptions. 37 4
Injury Reporting and Cyber Response Need Separate Instructions
Pie’s claims materials describe workplace-injury reporting and a state-dependent handler allocation that is not fully reconciled with its advertised footprint. Coalition describes in-house cyber triage. A company holding both types of policy should maintain distinct contacts and notice instructions; an injury-reporting number is not automatically the correct cyber hotline. 38 39 9
What to Confirm in Quotes
Confirm every payroll state and class code, the audit documents and the appropriate workers’ compensation handler. Separately request Pie’s partner cyber insurer and policy, and compare them with Coalition’s proposed California cyber/Tech E&O route. Do not carry forward Pie commercial-auto assumptions from older material: its current FAQ says new and renewal issuance ended in 2026. 29 32 11
Service Comparison
Coalition vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coalition | Pie Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Access to insurers | Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 3,2 | Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 23,40,41,42 AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 40 Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 23,25,26,27,28 |
| Application process | Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 13 Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 12 | A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 20,19,21 The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 24,21 Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 21,19 |
| Fees and compensation | Coalition says independent producers typically receive commissions based on premium for new and renewed policies. Contingent commissions, placement incentives and compensation for certain cybersecurity sales may also apply. 4 Coalition says it retains part of earned premiums to fund operations and broker commissions and receives additional carrier payments based on the portfolio’s annual loss ratio. 16 The reviewed compensation disclosures do not state the commission percentage, broker fee or total premium for a particular startup quote. Obtain an itemized cost and compensation explanation from the placing broker. 4,16 | Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 35,36 Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 35 Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 34 Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 39,23 |
| Claims assistance | Coalition describes in-house cyber claims triage and assistance attempting to recover stolen funds. Its Tech E&O page says the same claims team manages cyber and Tech E&O claims. These service descriptions do not establish response quality or payment of a particular loss. 9,1 | Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 38 Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 39,29,40 |
