Does Inland Marine Cover Water Damage?

Some forms include certain water-related losses, while others exclude or limit them; the cause and wording determine the result.

The California Department of Insurance says standard inland-marine perils may include flood, but a particular policy’s definitions and exclusions control. In the sample AAIS equipment form, “water damage” appears among covered-peril language, alongside limitations and other exclusions. That does not mean every leak, seepage, flood, or waterborne event is insured.

Identify the source of water you want covered: burst pipe, rain, surface flood, storm surge, or water during transport. Compare the definitions, exclusions, deductibles, protective safeguards, and any flood endorsement. Check whether property left outdoors is treated differently. If the quote is unclear, ask the broker to describe the coverage for the exact scenario in writing.
