Mylo vs
StartupInsurance.ai
Compare Mylo’s small-business and benefits brokerage with StartupInsurance.ai’s startup contract review when the first hires change insurance needs.
Introduction
A founder making the first hires can face two separate projects: business insurance for the company and benefit plans for employees. Mylo markets both small-business brokerage and a small-group benefits service. StartupInsurance.ai emphasizes startup placements and review of customer-contract requirements. Compare the workstreams separately before deciding whether one engagement can coordinate them. 1 14 21 22

Key Differences Between Mylo and StartupInsurance.ai
Benefits and Management Liability Protect Different Interests
Mylo markets benefits to employers with 2–99 employees, with enrollment support and an HR portal. StartupInsurance.ai’s startup catalogue includes employment practices and fiduciary liability. Those labels do not describe employee medical or dental plans: ask for separate proposals and responsible advisors. The absence of a benefits entry in StartupInsurance.ai’s record is not proof it cannot arrange a referral or another solution. 14 21
Conversely, Mylo’s business catalogue should not be read as evidence that every investor-required management policy is included in a small-business package. Give the advisor the actual D&O and employment requirements, then identify any additional placements. 1 23
Use the Current Business Identity
Mylo’s history begins inside Lockton, but its current story identifies Group 1001 as its backer; the shared ownership record includes later reporting that it ceased being part of Lockton. Do not treat the historical connection as current Lockton ownership or assume a Group 1001 company will issue the policy. Mylo’s California trade name also needs to match the engagement. 2 16 17 1
StartupInsurance.ai identifies its operating producer as ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. For either route, the service brand and corporate relationship remain separate from the insurer accepting the business risk or the benefit-plan carrier. 22 3
Agree on Service Across the Two Workstreams
Mylo publishes carrier-specific service and claims contacts, with a Mylo service-professional fallback. Its benefits portal is a separate documented service, not proof of a universal commercial-policy dashboard. StartupInsurance.ai advertises centralized documents, certificates and renewal tracking. Ask where HR and finance should send changes and whether one contact coordinates the responses. 4 14 21
Mylo says most buyers do not pay it a purchase fee but describes exceptions; ContractorNerd permits several kinds of fees. Neither statement sets the amount for this combined hiring project. 2 26
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Separate deliverables: Which benefit plans, business policies and management coverages are actually being proposed? 14 23
- California engagement: Verify the producer’s legal/trade name and each plan or policy’s eligibility. 1 24
- Ongoing changes: Who handles a new employee, coverage change, certificate and claim, and which charges apply? 4 26
Service Comparison
Mylo vs StartupInsurance.ai: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Mylo | StartupInsurance.ai |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Mylo describes itself as an independent insurance broker for small and growing businesses. It recommends coverage and compares available quotes from multiple insurers rather than issuing its own policies. 1,2 Mylo says it launched within Lockton Companies in 2015 and now has Group 1001 as its backer. A May 2023 Kansas City Business Journal report said Group 1001 became the majority investor and Mylo was no longer part of Lockton; the reviewed sources did not provide a newer ownership percentage. 2,16,17 Mylo, LLC operates the website and is the named insurance agency. Its footer identifies Mylo Insurance Solutions, LLC as a trade name in California, Illinois, Michigan and North Dakota, and Mylo Solutions, LLC as a trade name in New York. 1,3,18,19 Mylo also supplies an embedded insurance-shopping service to other companies and insurance agencies. A buyer entering through a partner should identify whether Mylo, the partner or another licensed entity is the producer for the transaction. 15,16 | StartupInsurance.ai identifies itself as a marketing brand of ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. ContractorNerd describes its role as an insurance agent or broker, not an insurer; it does not underwrite the policies. 22,25 ContractorNerd’s licensing page assigns quotes, binding and insurance transactions to ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC, with servicing supported by its licensed agents and partners. Its terms allow submissions through insurers and intermediaries. Confirm the producer-of-record arrangement for your StartupInsurance.ai placement. 24,25 |
| Application process | A business buyer can answer questions about the company and industry online or work by phone with a licensed advisor. Mylo says its system recommends coverage and compares available quotes; some carrier and coverage combinations can be purchased online, but an agent finalizes the policy in most cases. 1,3 Mylo’s Terms of Use say a purchase may carry additional transaction terms, require accurate and complete application answers and is not guaranteed to result in an issued policy. The posted site terms were last updated in November 2018, so buyers should review the current terms presented with a quote. 3 | The online intake starts with coverage choices and shows subsequent sections for company details, financials, employees, claims, existing insurance and signature. Its initial choices are D&O, cyber, technology E&O, employment practices, fiduciary, crime and general liability. Only the public starting screen was inspected; quote delivery and binding were not tested. 23 |
| Servicing and renewals | The reviewed public pages identify Mylo advisors, a service-professional fallback and a benefits HR portal, but do not establish one universal workflow for commercial policy changes, certificates, renewals or cancellations across carriers. 1,4,14 | The company offers a free review of existing policies and a customer contract, promising a written assessment of AI exclusions and contract gaps within 48 hours. That timing and the review’s completeness have not been independently tested. 22 The company advertises self-service certificates, centralized policy documents and renewal tracking. These operating services were not tested in an authenticated account. 21 |
| Fees and compensation | Mylo says its guided shopping service is free and that 95% of customers do not pay Mylo a fee when purchasing. It generally earns a carrier commission; in fewer than 5% of transactions, it says it charges a fee when it handles billing and incurs higher administrative costs. The reviewed disclosure does not give the fee amount. 2 | ContractorNerd discloses possible insurer/intermediary commissions, buyer-paid fees and contingent compensation. Fees can include platform, technology, policy-handling or consulting charges; not every charge applies to every policy. It says applicable fees are disclosed before binding or agreed before charging. A technology access fee, if charged, is generally non-refundable under its stated terms. Request the agreement and amounts applicable to your StartupInsurance.ai quote; the free review is not a promise of fee-free placement. 26 |
