Hiscox vs Mylo

Hiscox underwrites small-business policies available online; Mylo is an independent broker with Group 1001 as later backer, not a Lockton-owned carrier. Compare carrier-direct Hiscox paper with a multi-carrier brokerage.

Introduction

Hiscox sells small-business policies directly to eligible buyers. Mylo is a broker that shops more than 40 partners and lists Hiscox among Travelers, Liberty Mutual and The Hartford. Mylo’s Lockton origin is historical; current materials name Group 1001 as backer. Do not treat Mylo as a Lockton or Hiscox subsidiary. 16 29

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Hiscox Shines

  • Hiscox Inc., a Delaware producer, handles online small-business sales; Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. is the affiliated admitted insurer named for Hiscox NOW products. 5,4
  • Eligible applicants can quote Hiscox general liability, professional liability/E&O, cyber and a business owner’s policy online. 16,7,8,9,10,2

Where Mylo Shines

  • Buyers can shop online or with a licensed advisor; Mylo says it compares available quotes, with an agent finalizing most policies. 28,30
  • Employers with 2–99 employees can explore group benefits with a licensed advisor and a year-round HR portal. 41

Key Differences Between Hiscox and Mylo

Carrier Storefront Versus Independent Broker

Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. underwrites Hiscox small-business products offered online. Mylo describes itself as an independent insurance broker; Mylo, LLC operates the site. A Mylo purchase appoints a broker and can bind a non-Hiscox insurer even when Hiscox is on the partner list. 24 28

Ownership Story That Buyers Misread

Mylo says it launched within Lockton Companies in 2015 and now has Group 1001 as its backer. That sequence does not establish current Lockton ownership. Hiscox’s terms and about pages describe Hiscox companies and partner carriers; they do not describe owning Mylo. 29 5

Product Breadth Including Benefits and Medical Malpractice

Mylo’s commercial catalogue includes BOP, commercial auto, GL, cyber, medical malpractice, professional liability, surety, umbrella, workers compensation and small-group benefits for 2–99 employees. Hiscox’s direct core is GL, professional liability, cyber and BOP, with partner WC, auto and group health. Mylo’s medical malpractice and group-benefits pages are not Hiscox products. 28 16

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Named insurer on the Mylo proposal versus Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. 31

  • Whether you need medical malpractice or group benefits, which Mylo markets and Hiscox does not as core direct lines. 36

  • Current Mylo ownership language (Group 1001 backer, not Lockton owner). 43

Service Comparison

Hiscox vs Mylo: documented services and availability

CriteriaHiscoxMylo
Business role

Hiscox is the brand name used by its U.S. insurance businesses. Website terms identify Hiscox Inc., a Delaware corporation headquartered in Atlanta, as a licensed insurance intermediary for admitted and surplus-lines business. About Hiscox US names Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. (NAIC 10200) as the affiliated insurer and Hiscox Inc. as its general agent. Broker-only pages are restricted to licensed market professionals; the small-business section is the consumer product path. 5,4

In California, Hiscox Inc. says it does business as Hiscox Insurance Agency and publishes producer license number 0F09668. Its current producer-license status remains independently unverified; the number is company-reported. 6,23,11,5

Mylo describes itself as an independent insurance broker for small and growing businesses. It recommends coverage and compares available quotes from multiple insurers rather than issuing its own policies. 28,29

Mylo says it launched within Lockton Companies in 2015 and now has Group 1001 as its backer. A May 2023 Kansas City Business Journal report said Group 1001 became the majority investor and Mylo was no longer part of Lockton; the reviewed sources did not provide a newer ownership percentage. 29,43,44

Mylo, LLC operates the website and is the named insurance agency. Its footer identifies Mylo Insurance Solutions, LLC as a trade name in California, Illinois, Michigan and North Dakota, and Mylo Solutions, LLC as a trade name in New York. 28,30,45,46

Mylo also supplies an embedded insurance-shopping service to other companies and insurance agencies. A buyer entering through a partner should identify whether Mylo, the partner or another licensed entity is the producer for the transaction. 42,43

Coverage lines

Hiscox directly markets and offers online quotes for general liability, professional liability (errors and omissions), cyber security insurance and a business owner’s policy that combines general liability with commercial property. IT pages present those same lines for technology consultants rather than a separately named technology E&O policy. Website examples and coverage lists are illustrative; the issued policy controls. 16,7,8,9,10,2

Hired/non-owned auto and commercial crime are described as upgrades to a Hiscox business owner’s policy, not standalone Hiscox policies. Crime is not sold separately and is not available in all states. HNOA is tied to the BOP occurrence limit and does not replace commercial auto for vehicles the business owns or regularly operates. 20,21,10

Hiscox also markets partner coverage for workers’ compensation (Hartford Fire, generally requiring a Hiscox general-liability policy), commercial auto (GEICO referral and, separately, CyberPolicy), medical malpractice (NOW Insurance), short-term liability (Thimble/Markel), and CyberPolicy quotes for umbrella, directors and officers, and employment practices liability. Those pages are partner access paths, not proof that Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. issues the policy. 11,12,13,14,15,26

Mylo’s current commercial catalogue lists business owner’s policies, commercial auto, general liability, cyber, medical malpractice, professional liability, surety bonds, commercial umbrella and workers’ compensation. 28,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40

Mylo describes a business owner’s policy as combining general liability, commercial property and business-interruption coverage. The actual causes of loss, property, locations, limits and interruption period depend on the offered policy. 28,32

Mylo’s commercial-auto page describes bodily-injury and property-damage liability, with collision, comprehensive and non-owned-auto coverage as possible components depending on the business and vehicles. 33

For medical professionals, Mylo markets claims-made and occurrence malpractice policies and says tail coverage can extend reporting under a claims-made policy. Its page treats cyber liability as separate coverage to add rather than a protection supplied by malpractice insurance alone. 36

Mylo markets small-group benefits to employers with 2–99 employees, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, accident and critical-illness options. It describes online or phone enrollment, a year-round HR portal and help from a licensed benefits advisor. 41

The reviewed public product pages do not provide current specimen policies, endorsements or a complete schedule of limits, deductibles, exclusions and state variations. Those terms must be checked in the actual quote and policy forms. 28,36,30

Fees and compensation

Hiscox’s general-liability FAQ says buyers may pay annually or monthly with no additional fees, using debit or credit card. The California small-business page also lists monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual options with no fees. Product pages advertise up to a 5% discount for bundling certain Hiscox coverages. Published tables of monthly cost are labeled illustrative and are not quotes. 7,6,10

The reviewed Hiscox small-business, terms-of-use and appetite pages do not publish a buyer-facing commission, producer-fee or contingent-commission schedule. The 2026 appetite guide states that actual cost, commission, premium and coverage may vary with underwriting. Amounts payable besides premium therefore remain not disclosed in those sources. 23,5,7

Mylo says its guided shopping service is free and that 95% of customers do not pay Mylo a fee when purchasing. It generally earns a carrier commission; in fewer than 5% of transactions, it says it charges a fee when it handles billing and incurs higher administrative costs. The reviewed disclosure does not give the fee amount. 29

Claims assistance

Hiscox says customers can start a claim online, by phone or by mail. The claims center lists 1-866-424-8508 with weekday and weekend Eastern hours; a professional-liability FAQ separately tells current customers that 866-424-8508 is open 24 hours a day. Hiscox says it assigns a specialized claims professional, validates coverage and may appoint an attorney for covered liability claims. Policies placed with Hartford, GEICO, NOW Insurance, Markel/Thimble or CyberPolicy markets may use different notice instructions. These statements describe a reporting process, not independently measured claims outcomes. 17,27,7

Mylo publishes carrier-specific support and claims contacts and directs customers to the insurer for many service needs. If a carrier is not listed, the page gives a Mylo Service Professional number; it does not promise that Mylo decides or pays claims. 31

Access to insurers

Hiscox NOW appetite and About Hiscox US say admitted small-business products described there are underwritten by Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., a Chicago-based insurer licensed in all 50 states and D.C. The California Department of Insurance independently identifies that company as an Illinois-domiciled property-and-casualty insurer, NAIC 10200, California Company ID 1439-9, authorized in California since 14 September 1953 with unlimited-normal status. Hiscox’s California marketing page also cites Illinois license number 8754, which is not the CDI company ID; reconcile names and numbers on the quote. 24,25,4,23,6

Hiscox refers small-business buyers to other insurers or marketplaces for several products: workers’ compensation is underwritten by Hartford Fire Insurance; the commercial-auto page refers customers to GEICO and affiliates; medical malpractice is accessed through NOW Insurance, which Hiscox says is not affiliated with the Hiscox group; short-term liability is underwritten by Markel Insurance Company through Thimble. A separate other-insurance page instead partners with CyberPolicy for commercial auto, umbrella, directors and officers, and employment practices liability. The issuing company on a partner quote is therefore not assumed to be Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. 11,12,13,14,15

Hiscox Inc. says it is an approved Lloyd’s coverholder and underwrites surplus-lines business on behalf of Lloyd’s Syndicates 33 and 3624, with U.S. surplus-lines placements made by licensed surplus-lines brokers. Terms also say Hiscox Inc. may place admitted and surplus-lines business with Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., other domestic insurers, and Lloyd’s syndicates. That surplus-lines route is described as distinct from the online small-business catalogue. 4,5

Mylo says its commercial brokerage works with more than 40 carrier partners and names Travelers, Liberty Mutual, The Hartford and Hiscox as examples. That panel does not establish which insurers will consider or quote a particular business. 28,31

Mylo’s public pages do not provide a complete product-and-state schedule of issuing insurers. The carrier contact directory names companies used for some customers, but the legal insurer for each proposed policy must be confirmed in the quote and policy documents. 28,31,30
