Harper vs
ERGO NEXT Insurance
How Harper and ERGO NEXT Insurance differ for an auto-service business comparing specialist operations, optional enhancements and partner products.
Introduction
Harper is a commercial insurance broker that markets auto dealers and garage-related risks alongside other complex businesses. ERGO NEXT Insurance offers small-business policies for auto-service classes; its commercial-auto route uses Progressive. For an auto-service operator, compare the accepted work and vehicle exposures before treating the shared auto terminology as equivalent coverage. 2 8 1 40 31

Key Differences Between Harper and ERGO NEXT Insurance
Customer Vehicles and Business Vehicles
The 2026 general liability and BOP coverage guides list optional damage-to-rented-premises, garagekeepers, abuse-and-molestation and lost-key protections for specified business classes. These are coverage enhancements within eligible ERGO NEXT programs, not a documented set of standalone policies available to every direct buyer. 46,47
an auto-repair business holds customer vehicles overnight and buys a service van. Harper markets garage liability and commercial auto, while ERGO NEXT documents garagekeepers enhancements for particular auto-service classes and its public auto page directs the van inquiry to a partner. Ask which proposed wording addresses damage to customer vehicles while held for repair or storage and which addresses operation of the company van. The presence of the word “auto” does not answer both. 1 31 48
For ERGO NEXT, identify whether the garagekeepers option is available for this profession, state and purchasing channel and what base policy it requires. For Harper, obtain the garage-related form, accepted operations and exclusions from the proposed insurer. Harper’s broad industry appetite and ERGO NEXT’s class-specific enhancements are starting points for that review; acceptance of overnight storage and the particular repair activities still belongs in the insurer’s proposal. 40 8 7
The van can also create a separate service relationship. ERGO NEXT explicitly routes commercial auto to Progressive; Harper arranges commercial coverage through insurer markets. Request the producer, issuing insurer and claims contacts for the vehicle policy separately from the premises or garage proposal. A convenient starting website should not hide a second policy’s billing or renewal requirements. 31 1 2
Vehicle Sales and Bond Requirements
If the repair business later begins selling used vehicles, ask both teams to reassess the accepted operation. Harper advertises auto dealers and specifically lists dealer bonds among its surety offerings. ERGO NEXT’s contractor-bond page describes a Liberty Mutual Surety referral and says it does not itself offer that bond. A contractor-bond link should not be assumed to satisfy a dealer-related requirement. 8 12 39
Request the exact bond form and any indemnity obligation—the promise to reimburse the surety if it pays—alongside the revised liability proposal. Harper’s explanation of bond repayment makes the distinction concrete. For ERGO NEXT, confirm whether an appropriate partner route exists for the new requirement instead of inferring availability from the contractor-specific page. The insurance and bond purchases may need different providers even if the existing repair policy remains suitable. 12 39 22
Buying Channels and Underwriting Details
ERGO NEXT documents online quote and purchase paths as well as licensed support and agents. The agent materials do not establish that every enhancement is selectable in the direct flow. Harper describes specialist-led gathering of information and insurer approaches, with AI assisting staff and licensed professionals and carriers reviewing final decisions. Ask the person handling the submission to confirm the profession and work description rather than choosing the closest label to proceed. 25 40 9 3
Neither communication nor payment should substitute for coverage confirmation. Harper’s terms prohibit binding or changing insurance by text. ERGO NEXT’s terms say payment does not bind until the carrier approves the application. Before accepting customer vehicles at a new site or starting a newly disclosed activity, obtain the accepted terms and effective date and identify any remaining underwriting conditions. 2 22
Harper is the intermediary, and its wholesale page claims limited delegated authority on selected programs. ERGO NEXT includes agencies and an affiliated insurer while listing other possible issuers. Get the legal insurer on each actual policy; neither delegated authority nor parent-group ownership establishes the risk bearer across the whole account. 14 22 23
Changes and Ongoing Administration
ERGO NEXT’s online account supports documents, certificates and some changes, with staff handling other requests. Harper’s portal advertises policy, certificate and payment access and its service materials describe annual reviews. Ask who processes a change in operations, what requires insurer approval and how the partner-auto policy will be kept aligned at renewal. Neither public feature list establishes a universal turnaround. 43 16 17
For price, ERGO NEXT’s annual-policy installments should be compared with the full Harper proposal, including all separate placements. ERGO NEXT says monthly payments carry no interest, finance fee or late-payment fee; its terms separately permit applicable agency service and card transaction fees. Harper’s public referral economics do not set the buyer’s fees. Request premium, tax, earned service charges, installments and bond costs separately. 22 15 12
Both describe claims assistance, but obtain the insurer-specific instructions for customer-vehicle incidents, premises claims and the service van. ERGO NEXT’s own claim process may differ from its auto partner’s route; Harper’s advocacy does not itself determine whether the claim is covered. 44 31 17
What to Confirm in Quotes
- A vehicle-exposure map: Distinguish customer-vehicle damage from company-vehicle operation and request the actual forms, limits and exclusions. 1 48
- Eligibility and channel confirmation: Identify which optional protections are approved for the profession, location and agent or direct route. 40 8
- A sales-expansion review: Obtain the exact dealer-related bond requirement and indemnity agreement, without substituting a contractor-bond referral. 12 39
- Separate policy contacts and charges: Record the issuer, effective date, billing and claims route for the garage and partner-auto placements. 2 31 22
Service Comparison
Harper vs ERGO NEXT Insurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Harper | ERGO NEXT Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Customer focus | Its advertised customers include contractors, restaurants, auto dealers, childcare and adult-care providers, manufacturers, and transportation businesses. Harper emphasizes operations that are difficult to place with an insurer. 8,13 | ERGO NEXT Insurance sells commercial insurance for small businesses and self-employed workers through an online application, licensed advisors and agency partners. Buyers can request coverage, receive electronic documents and manage supported policies online. 19,25,42 |
| Application process | The public quote form asks for your contact and business details, state, estimated annual revenue, business activity and requested coverage. It includes an existing-customer checkbox and a text-message consent choice. The visible form starts an inquiry; it does not display a final premium or issued policy. 1 The founders describe Harper Hub as internal software that helps complete forms, identify carriers and underwriters, and manage client communications. Their Y Combinator launch describes full autonomy as a direction for the business. 6 Harper’s privacy policy says AI extracts document information, drafts messages for review, organizes follow-ups and assists staff. It says licensed professionals and carriers review final decisions, including eligibility and binding. AI marketing therefore does not establish that a machine can approve your coverage on its own. 3 The privacy policy describes collecting applications, loss records and business documents. It also says customer communications and policy information train Harper’s own models, while its enterprise AI vendors state they do not train their foundation models on customer data. These are different uses of your information. 3 Harper’s messaging terms say a text cannot bind, change, renew or cancel insurance. Coverage takes effect only with written confirmation from Harper and the applicable carrier; quotes sent by text remain subject to underwriting and final documentation. 2 Harper’s February 2026 announcement advertises coverage within 24–48 hours. That is a company timing claim, not a deadline established for your application. Ask what information and approvals are still outstanding before arranging work around a proposed start date. 13 | The public quote flow starts with industry and state, then shows stages for coverage, application, quote and purchase. ERGO NEXT says supported policies can be quoted and bought online; licensed advisors are also available. 41,25,42 A complete application and carrier underwriting approval are required. The terms say a premium payment does not bind coverage until the carrier approves the application, and a payment is refunded if the carrier declines it. 22,26 |
| Access to insurers | Harper’s homepage displays insurers including Progressive, Kinsale, USLI, Atlantic Casualty, James River, GEICO, AIG and Hiscox. Its February 2026 announcement reports relationships with more than 165 underwriters and plans for more direct appointments. An underwriter count is not a count of distinct insurers that will quote your account. 1,13 An older Harper article says it uses only AAA-rated carriers, without specifying the rating agency, legal insurers or dated rating records. That does not establish a financial-strength rating for the insurer on your quote. Request that insurer’s exact name and current rating evidence. 17 | ERGO NEXT’s current terms list Next Insurance US Company, State National Insurance Company and National Specialty Insurance Company as carriers that might bind a customer. The listed agencies include Next Insurance, Inc., Next First Insurance Agency, AP Intego and third-party agency partners, so the issuing company must be checked on each quote and policy. 22,23 The Mississippi Insurance Department identifies Next Insurance US Company as a property-and-casualty insurer with NAIC number 16285 and lists authorized lines including liability, property, inland marine, surety and workers’ compensation in Mississippi. 24 A posted Texas restaurant general-liability specimen names State National Insurance Company, Inc. as the insurer and Next First Insurance Agency, Inc. as administrator. It is an illustrative 2024–2025 specimen, not evidence of the insurer or form a new applicant will receive. 45 |
| Servicing and renewals | For workers’ compensation, Harper says it helps classify payroll by the work employees perform and prepares information for premium audits. Its cost FAQ identifies payroll, job categories and claims history as pricing factors. An audit can reconcile the information used to price the policy; Harper’s service description is not a promise that your premium cannot change. 10,18 Under that referral program, Harper says it owns the account and handles quoting, placement, servicing, renewals and claims; the referring agent has no servicing duties. Its separate wholesale page offers white-label options. If another agent introduces you, clarify which arrangement applies and who will be your ongoing contact. 15,14 Harper’s public portal entry page advertises access to certificates, policies, payments and application status. Sign-in uses the email address associated with a Harper invitation; the page directs customers without an invitation to its service team. Features behind sign-in were not tested. 16 Harper describes ongoing policy management and annual coverage reviews. Its messaging terms list reminders about renewals, billing and premium finance, along with communications about changes and certificates. These service descriptions do not specify a guaranteed renewal price or a commitment to re-shop every policy. 17,2 | Policyholders can use the online account to access electronic policy documents, update supported policy and payment details, create certificates, add additional insureds and request cancellation. Some changes require staff handling; the account FAQ says revised documents can take seven to ten business days in those cases. 43,22,42 The help center advertises a 24/7 AI assistant and U.S.-based insurance experts on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. The reviewed sources do not promise licensed human support around the clock. 42 A direct customer can request cancellation through the online account. ERGO NEXT says it stops future monthly payments and the account FAQ describes a prorated premium refund, but separately earned service or card fees are generally nonrefundable and the terms allow a cancellation fee where applicable. 43,22 |
| Fees and compensation | Harper Partners advertises a payment of 50% of Harper’s commission to an appropriately licensed referring agent, paid 60 days after the account settles. It says the underlying commission varies by coverage line, premium and carrier. The percentage is a share of commission, not a discount on the buyer’s premium. 15 The reviewed Harper pages do not disclose a buyer-facing schedule of brokerage fees or account-specific commission rates. Its statement that partner agents can join for free does not establish that buying insurance through Harper carries no fees. Request an itemized total, including premium, taxes, fees and any financing charges. 15,17,9,2 | ERGO NEXT and its partners may receive commissions, fees or interest. The terms permit installment, service and cancellation fees separate from premium; Next First Insurance Agency may charge a nonrefundable service fee at binding and renewal and a nonrefundable card transaction fee, while payment by bank account can avoid the card fee. The reviewed terms do not publish the amounts. 22 Policies are annual even when premium is paid monthly. The terms say monthly payments carry no interest, finance fee or late-payment fee, but the stored payment method may be charged at renewal, missed payments can lead to a cancellation request, and a deposit premium can be adjusted after a premium audit when business details change. 22 |
