Founder Shield vs
Harper
How Founder Shield’s growth-company brokerage and Harper’s complex-risk placement differ when funding, operations and contracts change.
Introduction
Founder Shield arranges commercial insurance with a focus on venture-backed and growing companies. Harper also arranges policies with insurers, emphasizing businesses whose operations are difficult to place. A funding milestone and the work the company performs can raise different insurance questions. 1 30 41

Key Differences Between Founder Shield and Harper
Financing Risk and the Work Being Insured
If a security-services company raises outside capital and adds armed patrols, those changes create different insurance questions. Founder Shield’s D&O material addresses directors’ and officers’ liability, including protection for individuals and exclusions concerning major shareholders. Harper’s security practice specifically addresses armed guards, mobile patrols and liability arising from guard conduct. An investor’s insurance request and an operational liability submission therefore need different supporting documents. 13 39
For the financing, send the ownership structure and investor requirements and ask how shareholder claims are treated. For the patrol expansion, describe duties, vehicles and use-of-force exposures and request the relevant exclusions and endorsements. Neither a D&O label nor a security-industry landing page proves that a proposed policy covers the scenario. Those requests test the proposed programs; they do not establish that only one broker can arrange either type of insurance. 13 39
Founder Shield’s catalogue markets health and benefits services. Harper’s privacy policy says it does not currently offer health or life insurance. If hiring creates a benefits project alongside commercial liability, ask whether that project sits inside the engagement or requires another provider; Harper’s Georgia life qualification does not establish an available life product. 11 31 32
Proposed Insurers and Network Totals
Both businesses are intermediaries. Founder Shield’s terms expressly separate its service from insuring the risk or determining coverage. Harper’s wholesale page describes selected delegated binding authority, but does not identify its complete product and state scope. Authority to bind a particular insurer’s contract would not turn Harper into the insurer responsible for that contract. 2 42
Their network figures also measure different things: Founder Shield advertises carriers, while Harper’s funding announcement counts underwriters. Comparing those totals as though they measured competing offers would be misleading. Request a placement record showing the markets approached, their responses and the reason for the recommendation. If both brokers approach the same insurer, clarify how that insurer handles the submissions before assuming there will be two independent offers. 6 10 41
For a contract with a financial-strength requirement, obtain evidence for the exact issuing entity. Founder Shield states an AM Best selection standard; an older Harper article uses an unspecified AAA description. Those statements do not supply comparable current ratings for the two proposed insurers. 10 45
Deadlines, Certificates and Endorsements
Founder Shield describes proposal approval, payment selection, a desired start date and follow-up signatures. Harper’s messaging terms require written coverage confirmation from Harper and the applicable carrier. Its advertised placement speed and Founder Shield’s advertised application time concern different stages. For a contract starting Monday, request a list of outstanding underwriting conditions and written confirmation of the effective date. 9 6 30 41
Founder Shield asks for contract insurance requirements when handling certificates so it can assess endorsement needs. Harper’s portal advertises certificate access. If a customer requests additional-insured protection, downloading proof and obtaining the policy amendment are separate tasks: ask who checks the requirement, arranges any endorsement and confirms completion. Neither an emailed request nor a portal document establishes that new protection was added. 18 44
Cost and Service After Placement
Founder Shield discloses several compensation routes and policy-dependent financing options. Harper publishes a referring-agent commission split, but that split is not a buyer discount or a complete fee schedule. Compare the total policy-period charge and financing repayment, then ask each broker to identify its remuneration on this account. No matched quotes establish which costs less. 2 22 43
When another agent introduces Harper, service ownership still needs an explicit assignment. Its referral program assigns the ongoing account to Harper, while its separate wholesale offering allows other arrangements. Founder Shield asks clients to report operational changes during the year. Agree who will receive a new-location or new-product update and who will obtain insurer acceptance; do not leave that responsibility with the person who merely made an introduction. 43 42 19
For claims, Founder Shield documents portal reporting and insurer-direct notice; Harper describes advocacy and documentation help, while its messaging terms warn against relying on text for urgent matters. That difference in published instructions is not evidence of different settlement quality. Obtain the policy’s reporting address and identify who confirms delivery to the insurer. 21 45 30
What to Confirm in Quotes
- A financing-and-operations coverage map: Identify the D&O treatment of investor claims separately from exclusions affecting the actual work, and say who will arrange benefits if needed. 13 39 31
- A market and authority record: Name the producer, issuing insurer, route to that insurer, current rating evidence and person authorized to bind. 2 10 42
- A contract-completion file: Include written effective-date confirmation, the certificate and any required endorsements, with an owner for unresolved conditions. 18 30
- An account-specific service and cost schedule: Separate financing from premium, identify any referring agent’s role, and name the renewal and urgent-claims contacts. 22 21 43 30
Service Comparison
Founder Shield vs Harper: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Founder Shield | Harper |
|---|---|---|
| Customer focus | Founder Shield focuses on venture-backed and high-growth businesses, from early funding rounds through an initial public offering. Its practices include technology, life sciences, financial services, retail and transportation. 1,6 | Its advertised customers include contractors, restaurants, auto dealers, childcare and adult-care providers, manufacturers, and transportation businesses. Harper emphasizes operations that are difficult to place with an insurer. 36,41 |
| Application process | The Get a Quote link opens a portal with Create Account and Sign In options. Registration offers Google, Microsoft, or an email address and password. 7,8 Founder Shield advertises an application that takes under 15 minutes. That is an application-time claim, not a guaranteed time to receive insurer terms or put coverage in force. 6 To buy coverage, Founder Shield’s FAQ says you approve a proposal, select a payment method and choose the desired start date. Its team then follows up on documents needing electronic signatures and handles the insurer’s paperwork. 9 | The public quote form asks for your contact and business details, state, estimated annual revenue, business activity and requested coverage. It includes an existing-customer checkbox and a text-message consent choice. The visible form starts an inquiry; it does not display a final premium or issued policy. 29 The founders describe Harper Hub as internal software that helps complete forms, identify carriers and underwriters, and manage client communications. Their Y Combinator launch describes full autonomy as a direction for the business. 34 Harper’s privacy policy says AI extracts document information, drafts messages for review, organizes follow-ups and assists staff. It says licensed professionals and carriers review final decisions, including eligibility and binding. AI marketing therefore does not establish that a machine can approve your coverage on its own. 31 The privacy policy describes collecting applications, loss records and business documents. It also says customer communications and policy information train Harper’s own models, while its enterprise AI vendors state they do not train their foundation models on customer data. These are different uses of your information. 31 Harper’s messaging terms say a text cannot bind, change, renew or cancel insurance. Coverage takes effect only with written confirmation from Harper and the applicable carrier; quotes sent by text remain subject to underwriting and final documentation. 30 Harper’s February 2026 announcement advertises coverage within 24–48 hours. That is a company timing claim, not a deadline established for your application. Ask what information and approvals are still outstanding before arranging work around a proposed start date. 41 |
| Access to insurers | Founder Shield advertises access to more than 200 carriers. Its placement FAQ says it selects markets first by their willingness to insure the industry and risk, then considers growth capacity, service and claims handling. The network size does not establish how many insurers will quote your account. 6,10 The placement FAQ says Founder Shield works exclusively with AM Best A-rated carriers. This is the broker’s stated selection standard; the reviewed sources do not independently establish the current rating of every insurer it uses. 10 Founder Shield identifies itself as the distributor of the AI product and names Testudo as its underwriter. Testudo describes Lloyd’s-backed capacity and says its US entity places insurance without bearing the risk. The insurer or syndicates responsible for a particular quote still need to be identified. 14,16,17 | Harper’s homepage displays insurers including Progressive, Kinsale, USLI, Atlantic Casualty, James River, GEICO, AIG and Hiscox. Its February 2026 announcement reports relationships with more than 165 underwriters and plans for more direct appointments. An underwriter count is not a count of distinct insurers that will quote your account. 29,41 An older Harper article says it uses only AAA-rated carriers, without specifying the rating agency, legal insurers or dated rating records. That does not establish a financial-strength rating for the insurer on your quote. Request that insurer’s exact name and current rating evidence. 45 |
| Servicing and renewals | Founder Shield’s certificate FAQ directs customers to email the team. For a request tied to a contract, it asks for the other party’s legal name and address, required wording, and the insurance requirements from the contract so the team can assess endorsement needs. 18 Founder Shield asks clients to report changes such as a new product, a different business model, a new office or entry into another territory. Its team says it will evaluate those changes and adjust coverage. 19 Founder Shield describes a platform for applications and renewals, with ongoing advisor support. Its renewal guide suggests starting 60–90 days before expiration and preparing updated business information and claims history. That is planning guidance, not a promised renewal-service deadline. 1,20 Founder Shield’s terms direct cancellation requests to client support and warn that some insurers retain a minimum earned premium—a portion you cannot recover by cancelling early. Check the proposal’s cancellation terms. 2 | For workers’ compensation, Harper says it helps classify payroll by the work employees perform and prepares information for premium audits. Its cost FAQ identifies payroll, job categories and claims history as pricing factors. An audit can reconcile the information used to price the policy; Harper’s service description is not a promise that your premium cannot change. 38,46 Under that referral program, Harper says it owns the account and handles quoting, placement, servicing, renewals and claims; the referring agent has no servicing duties. Its separate wholesale page offers white-label options. If another agent introduces you, clarify which arrangement applies and who will be your ongoing contact. 43,42 Harper’s public portal entry page advertises access to certificates, policies, payments and application status. Sign-in uses the email address associated with a Harper invitation; the page directs customers without an invitation to its service team. Features behind sign-in were not tested. 44 Harper describes ongoing policy management and annual coverage reviews. Its messaging terms list reminders about renewals, billing and premium finance, along with communications about changes and certificates. These service descriptions do not specify a guaranteed renewal price or a commitment to re-shop every policy. 45,30 |
| Fees and compensation | Founder Shield’s pricing FAQ says quotes generally cover one year, unless stated otherwise, and include the fees and charges for that policy period. It describes full payment, carrier installments and financing through premium-finance companies, depending on the policy and payment arrangement. 22 Founder Shield discloses compensation through commissions, fees or interest and invites questions about the amount and nature of that compensation. Its terms say customer charges will be disclosed in advance. 2 The Baldwin Group’s January 2026 disclosure also describes client fees, commissions tied to volume or profitability, compensation for affiliated placement services, and referral fees from providers such as premium-finance companies. These are possible group arrangements, not a finding that each applies to your Founder Shield policy. 23 | Harper Partners advertises a payment of 50% of Harper’s commission to an appropriately licensed referring agent, paid 60 days after the account settles. It says the underlying commission varies by coverage line, premium and carrier. The percentage is a share of commission, not a discount on the buyer’s premium. 43 The reviewed Harper pages do not disclose a buyer-facing schedule of brokerage fees or account-specific commission rates. Its statement that partner agents can join for free does not establish that buying insurance through Harper carries no fees. Request an itemized total, including premium, taxes, fees and any financing charges. 43,45,37,30 |
