Cowbell vs RiskCube

Compare Cowbell’s cyber programs and security services with RiskCube’s startup brokerage when choosing both a cyber policy and a broker.

Introduction

A startup choosing cyber insurance has two decisions to make: who represents it in the market and which program it buys. Cowbell offers cyber and specialty programs through agents and brokers. RiskCube offers a startup brokerage relationship that includes market comparison and contract support. These roles can be complementary, but the reviewed public materials do not establish that RiskCube can place Cowbell for this account. 8 9 23 26

Key Differences Between Cowbell and RiskCube

Select the Cyber Program Before Comparing Limits

Cowbell separates primary cyber programs from combined technology E&O/cyber and excess products. Prime Tech combines technology E&O with cyber; Prime Tech Plus is a separate excess product. RiskCube's catalogue offers cyber and technology E&O, while the broker selects the eventual insurer and terms. A comparison of two cyber limits would miss whether the proposal also addresses customer losses arising from failed technology services. 16 17 27 29

Cowbell's product appetites differ by business size and program. Its advertised Prime One AI-incident features are attached to that particular program, not every Cowbell policy. RiskCube's AI gap-placement description likewise needs the proposed wording and issuer. An early-stage company should not import features from a program aimed at larger organizations simply because the company markets both. 14 11 29 34

Security Operations and Insurance Administration

Cowbell describes continuous risk ratings, policyholder insights, security connectors, cybersecurity training and resiliency support alongside its cyber products. Some services are complimentary or limited to a trial or first policy year; managed detection, penetration testing, identity monitoring and compliance support also appear as subscription services for qualified customers. 22,11,15

RiskCube describes policy tracking, certificates, renewals and vendor-requirement review. That is an insurance-administration proposition; it does not establish an equivalent managed security service. When comparing the operational value of the proposals, separate work for the security lead from work for finance. Record which Cowbell tools are included, trial-only or subscription-based and what brokerage support remains necessary alongside them. 23 28 22

Named Paper Does Not Cover the Entire Brand

Cowbell names Palomar for Prime 100 and Prime 100 Pro, while other programs identify different paper or leave the precise issuing entity to the quote. Its Zurich Select Plus management product has its own wholesale route and target business profile. This does not make Zurich the insurer for all Cowbell products or turn a cyber purchase into a full startup insurance program. 11 12 14 19

RiskCube's California license identifiers are company-reported, and its legal terms allow surplus-lines placements. For a California company, obtain the exact policy route on either side; a national agency list and a product's availability statement answer different questions. 24 26 5

Incident Response and Broker Advocacy

Cowbell describes an around-the-clock cyber claims team and response panel. RiskCube describes human-led advocacy with the insurer. Those duties may operate alongside one another: an incident response contact and the broker helping navigate the claim need not be the same party. No service description establishes a better payment outcome. 21 28

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Which Cowbell program or alternative insurer is actually proposed, and does it include technology liability as well as cyber? 9 29
  • Can the chosen broker access that program for the company's California operations, and who issues it? 8 24
  • Which security services continue after a trial or first policy year, and what must the company pay or implement? 22
  • Who must receive urgent incident notice, and what assistance belongs to the broker rather than the response panel? 21 28

Service Comparison

Cowbell vs RiskCube: documented services and availability

CriteriaCowbellRiskCube
Business role

Cowbell is a specialty-insurance platform and agency, not the insurer named on every policy. Cowbell Insurance Agency LLC says it is a U.S. property-and-casualty producer and may act as a general agent for one or more carriers; the issuing insurer remains responsible for the policy. 1,5,2

Cowbell identifies Zurich as a $60 million Series C investor and partner, while Zurich describes Cowbell as its technology collaborator for Select Plus. The reviewed sources do not describe Cowbell as a Zurich subsidiary or say that Zurich underwrites every Cowbell product. 4,19,3

RiskCube offers startup insurance brokerage through RiskCube Insurance Services, LLC. Its parent, RiskCube, Inc., supplies the platform and operational support; third-party insurers issue coverage. 26,25

Access to insurers

Cowbell's materials name Palomar Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 100 and Prime 100 Pro, Palomar and Chaucer Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 250, and Chaucer for Prime One. Prime Plus and Prime Tech Plus name only A-rated carrier paper, while the Select Plus page says Zurich admitted paper without naming the issuing legal entity. 11,12,13,14,15,17,18,7

RiskCube says it compares multiple insurers. Its terms permit placements through surplus-lines channels; the reviewed legal disclosures and catalogue do not identify the issuing insurer for a specific California applicant. 23,26,25,27

Application process

A U.S. buyer works through an insurance agent or broker. Cowbell provides a state-filtered agent directory, while appointed agents use Cowbell's platform to quote, bind and issue eligible products; no direct-to-buyer quote path was documented in the reviewed sources. 8,1,9,11

RiskCube describes one digital intake followed by AI-assisted and broker-reviewed quote comparison and digital purchase. The public application URL reviewed displayed a contact form rather than a complete underwriting flow. 23,33

For technology E&O, RiskCube asks for product, customer, revenue and contract details, plus prior claims or known incidents. It qualifies its advertised quote timing by risk profile and underwriting complexity. 29

RiskCube’s terms say quotes are not binders: written confirmation from the insurer or its authorized representative and required conditions must be satisfied before coverage is bound. 26

Servicing and renewals

Cowbell describes continuous risk ratings, policyholder insights, security connectors, cybersecurity training and resiliency support alongside its cyber products. Some services are complimentary or limited to a trial or first policy year; managed detection, penetration testing, identity monitoring and compliance support also appear as subscription services for qualified customers. 22,11,15

Cowbell's FAQ directs policyholders to their agent for cancellation and directs agents to Cowbell for endorsements. It describes different renewal workflows: Prime 100 proposals are generated roughly 60 days before expiration, while Prime 250 requires a signed renewal application and underwriting review before a quote is released. 20

RiskCube describes platform access for policy management, certificate generation and renewal notifications. A certificate does not change coverage under its terms. 23,26

RiskCube says it reviews vendor insurance requirements and checks requested endorsements, including additional insured and waiver-of-subrogation language. Its terms warn that AI-assisted output can be incomplete or inaccurate. 28,26

Claims assistance

Cowbell says its in-house cyber claims team and incident-response panel are available around the clock. Its public intake instructions ask for the policy number or company name, the incident date and details, and a point of contact; coverage and claim payment still depend on the issuing insurer and policy. 21,11,14

RiskCube says claims advocacy is human-led and includes working with the insurer from first notice through resolution. This describes promised assistance, not independently demonstrated claims outcomes. 28
