Coterie Insurance vs Relm Insurance

Separate agent-arranged small-business premises coverage from AI developer and dependency risks.

Introduction

A small consultancy that rents an office and builds AI tools needs to distinguish premises insurance from the consequences of its technical work. Coterie is an MGA whose agents arrange small-business policies; Relm is a specialty insurance business with products aimed at AI developers and users. The practical question is whether the office and professional exposures fit one submission or need coordinated policies. 2 6 29

Key Differences Between Coterie Insurance and Relm Insurance

Office Coverage Is a Different Starting Point

Coterie’s core BOP combines liability and property, alongside separate general liability and miscellaneous professional liability offerings. Its professional product is for listed service professions, so describing a firm as a consultancy does not establish that AI development qualifies. Ask the agent to classify the work accurately before using an office-oriented quote as the budget for the whole business. 4 14

Relm’s NOVAAI addresses developer cyber and technology errors and omissions exposures, while RESCAAI targets operational losses involving third-party AI. Relm also advertises property and general liability, but its broad catalogue does not establish a BOP equivalent or that the same applicant can buy every line. 30 32 27

An Endorsement and a Separate AI Policy Need Different Tests

Coterie markets cyber as an optional endorsement rather than a standalone core policy. Relm describes separate AI products. Compare the endorsement’s applicable limits and triggers with the proposed AI policy; a shared cyber label cannot establish that either responds to biased output or a failed model integration. 12 15 29

Coterie’s professional-liability availability statements conflict across broad marketing and the product guide. Relm’s California AI placement route remains unestablished in the reviewed public documentation. These are different uncertainties: one concerns published product geography, the other the issuer and distribution route for the proposed AI cover. 5 7 14 25 26

Let the Agent Coordinate Locations and Charges

Coterie’s agent dashboard and policyholder tools support quoting and servicing, and its FAQ calls for a separate policy per business location. A team adding a second office should price that structure explicitly. Relm’s public inquiry route does not provide an equivalent location-servicing rule; request it from the placing broker. 5 10 34

Coterie discloses policy and installment fees and a possible separate risk-program fee. Relm’s reviewed sources do not disclose comparable buyer-specific charges. Compare the cost of the required combination, not a base BOP price against an AI policy with different obligations. 8 36

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Is the actual AI consulting or development work within the professional policy’s eligible services, and what does the cyber endorsement add? 14 15
  • Does the proposed Relm product address customer liability, your own interruption, or both through separate sections? Obtain California insurer and intermediary details. 29 25
  • How many location policies and fees are required, and who updates them when the team moves? 10 8

Service Comparison

Coterie Insurance vs Relm Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoterie InsuranceRelm Insurance
Business role

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22

Relm Insurance is a specialty insurance business serving emerging industries, including artificial intelligence. Its Bermuda insurer and US distribution operation have distinct roles. 24,26,25

Relm identifies Relm Insurance Ltd. as its Bermuda-regulated insurer and Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. as a US licensed producer. It describes its US operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with delegated insurance authority. The Bermuda entity says it deals only through appropriately licensed brokers. 25,26

Application process

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8

Relm provides an inquiry form requesting contact details, company name and location. Its US launch describes access through distribution partners, and the website states that Relm Insurance Ltd. deals through licensed brokers. The reviewed pages do not establish instant quoting or online binding. 34,26

Availability

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 7,8,18

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 5,7,14

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 17,18

Relm’s legal page lists California insurance producer license 6013054 for Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. This is company-reported and was not independently verified in a regulator record; that row does not list a California surplus-lines license. 25

The reviewed AI product, US MGA and legal pages do not establish the issuing insurer, admitted or surplus-lines status, or placing broker for a California NOVAAI, PONTAAI or RESCAAI policy. California product availability remains to be confirmed for the applicant. 25,26,29

Servicing and renewals

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8

The reviewed contact and terms pages provide general-inquiry and complaint channels but do not explain a customer self-service portal, certificate turnaround, endorsement process or renewal timetable. Ask which tasks your broker, the MGA and the issuing insurer will handle. 34,36

Fees and compensation

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8

The reviewed legal, terms and inquiry pages do not disclose buyer-specific broker fees, commission rates, minimum premiums or total California placement costs. Obtain the premium, fees and applicable taxes separately in a written quote. 25,36,34
