Coterie Insurance vs Pie Insurance

How Coterie’s small-business packages and Pie’s workers’ compensation program differ for an employer’s coverage and payroll workflow.

Introduction

Coterie Insurance supplies small-business liability and property programs through agents; it expressly does not write workers’ compensation. Pie Insurance sells and administers workers’ compensation written by affiliated insurers, and offers selected other coverages through outside partners. For an employer adding a seasonal crew, these can be complementary purchases: the business package still needs to sit beside employee-injury coverage and the payroll work that follows. 6 11 28 26

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Coterie Insurance Shines

  • Agents can use prefilled business details to customize quotes and bind eligible small-business policies in one dashboard. 5,6,2
  • Policyholders can access documents, generate certificates, request changes and start claims online, with their agent handling coverage questions. 10,8

Where Pie Insurance Shines

  • Small businesses can start a workers’ compensation quote directly online or through an insurance agent. 25,24,26
  • Workers’ compensation payment options include pay-as-you-go using reported payroll, with no initial deposit. 40,41

Key Differences Between Coterie Insurance and Pie Insurance

Business Packages, Workers’ Compensation and Vehicles

A small landscaping contractor that already has Coterie liability or business owner’s policy (BOP) coverage and plans to employ a larger crew during its busy season still needs two checks. The agent should check the new operations and headcount against Coterie’s contractor appetite. Separately, Pie’s workers’ compensation application asks for payroll and classification information. These inputs answer different questions: whether the business still fits the existing program, and how the employee work should be insured and priced. 13 26

Pie also invites BOP and general-liability requests through partner insurers. That creates real overlap with Coterie, but does not require moving those policies to buy Pie workers’ compensation. Ask the existing agent whether it can coordinate the additional placement, or identify the Pie contact if buying directly. Compare any proposed replacement of the original package on its own terms, including property values, equipment and endorsements. 25 30 33 13

An owned work vehicle needs another answer. Coterie does not write automobile policies, and Pie says its former commercial-auto program stopped new and renewal business. A legacy claims link or an available hired/non-owned auto endorsement is not evidence of an available owned-vehicle policy. Put the vehicle placement on the coverage schedule separately. 11 13 37

Payroll Billing, Installments and Premium Audits

Pie’s pay-as-you-go option uses reported actual payroll for monthly premium and requires no initial deposit. Its ordinary monthly payment schedule instead requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments. For the seasonal contractor, ask whether the payroll provider can supply the required information and what happens when payroll is corrected. Choosing a payment frequency is not the same as choosing a payroll-reporting method. 41 40

Coterie’s installment option spreads the cost of its own policy and carries a disclosed installment charge; it is not a substitute for the Pie payroll process. Budget the two policies separately so a low-payroll month does not create the mistaken expectation that every insurance bill will fall with wages. 8 41

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 42

Keep job-duty records and subcontractor workers’ compensation certificates during the season, not just the total wage figure. Pie’s audit page specifically asks for those records. Its pay-as-you-go page promotes more accurate payments, but that does not remove the required audit or establish that every classification or subcontractor issue has already been resolved. Ask how the final calculation and any correction will be explained. 42 41

Certificates, Additional Insureds and Waivers

Coterie offers certificate tools and policy-change requests. Pie also offers workers’ compensation certificates, but its FAQ distinguishes those from waiver-of-subrogation requests and says its workers’ compensation product does not use additional-insured status. If a customer sends one checklist covering both policies, have the agent separate each requirement by coverage line. 10 39

A waiver addresses the insurer’s recovery rights against a specified party; it is a separate endorsement question from showing that party on a certificate. Pie asks for the requesting company, address and work to be performed and discloses a state-dependent charge. Request the approved wording before promising the customer that downloading a certificate satisfies the clause. 39

Issuing Insurers, Work States and Injury Reporting

Coterie’s carrier partners issue its policies. Pie identifies affiliated workers’ compensation insurers and unaffiliated insurers for its BOP and liability offerings. Even if both policies are administered through familiar brands, the declarations should identify the insurer responsible for each obligation. Pie-group financial-strength evidence should not be applied to a partner insurer’s separate policy. 8 28 45

If the crew starts working across a state line, verify that work in the actual proposal. Pie’s published footprint counts and claims-handler allocation do not fully agree. Its state documents and quote process are more useful starting points than a broad national marketing count, but neither alone establishes this contractor’s eligibility. 34 35 44

Pie asks for workplace injuries to be reported promptly through its published channels and identifies separate handling in some states. Coterie provides intake for its own products. Save the workers’ compensation state kit and the separate liability-policy instructions so an employee injury is routed appropriately. Intake help does not demonstrate which insurer will accept or pay a particular claim. 43 44 11

Fees, Payment Charges and Renewals

Coterie discloses policy, installment and possible risk-program charges. Pie publishes payment-method charges and separate waiver costs. Compare the full-year schedule, including the applicable card-fee exception and possible payroll adjustment, rather than comparing only the initial payments. Ask which payment and waiver charges apply to this policy. 8 40 39

Coterie permits automatic renewal where applicable; Pie describes sending a workers’ compensation renewal quote for review and acceptance. Assign both tasks before the busy season begins. Completing last year’s audit is not the same task as accepting next year’s proposal. 8 39 42

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Coverage schedule: Which existing Coterie policies remain, which Pie insurer writes workers’ compensation, and who handles the work vehicle? 11 28 37
  • Payroll and audit plan: Identify job duties, work states, payroll-feed responsibilities, correction procedures and subcontractor certificates. 42 41
  • Customer contract response: Separate liability endorsements, workers’ compensation waivers and certificates, with approval timing and charges for each. 10 39
  • Service calendar: Record the incumbent renewal instruction, Pie renewal acceptance, audit deadline and state-specific injury-reporting contact. 8 39 44

Service Comparison

Coterie Insurance vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoterie InsurancePie Insurance
Coverage lines

Coterie's current core catalogue consists of a business owner's policy (BOP), standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability (MPL/E&O). A BOP combines liability with property coverage; the other two are distinct policies. 2,4,3,14

Coterie's December 2025 BOP guide states eligibility of up to $10 million in revenue and 50 employees, reduced to $5 million and 15 employees for contractors. It lists up to $1 million in building value and $500,000 in business personal property, with limits and availability still varying by state, industry and quote. 13,8

Coterie currently markets cyber, workplace violence, employment practices liability, restaurant, liquor liability and contractors equipment endorsements. Its BOP guide also lists optional hired and non-owned auto liability, equipment breakdown, drone liability and other property extensions. These are optional additions, not evidence of separate standalone policies. 12,13,15,16

Coterie's MPL is a claims-made professional liability policy for listed service professions. Its current guide says the basic policy includes a 60-day extended reporting period and offers longer periods for purchase; retroactive coverage and limits depend on the selected terms and eligibility. 14,8

Coterie's claims page expressly says it does not write workers' compensation or automobile policies. Hired and non-owned auto appears only as an optional liability endorsement in the BOP guide and should not be read as commercial auto physical-damage coverage. 11,13

Current direct offering pages support workers’ compensation, business owner’s policy, cyber, general liability and professional liability/E&O. The non-workers’ compensation pages describe typical protection; the issued policy and endorsements determine actual coverage. 26,30,31,33,32,27

Pie says it stopped accepting commercial-auto submissions on December 1, 2025 and will issue no new or renewal commercial-auto policies on or after January 1, 2026. Existing policyholders retain coverage through their policy term and can still use Pie’s claim channels. 37,43

Pie’s terms say website coverage descriptions are not part of an insurance contract and do not change a policy or endorsement; eligibility and product availability can vary by geography and applicant. 27

Access to insurers

Coterie's terms say carrier partners underwrite and issue its policies. Its claims page identifies a separate Spinnaker Specialty route for surplus-lines policies beginning CSE, while its current coastal guide names Spinnaker Insurance Company only for eligible coastal Texas BOP risks. The issuing insurer therefore needs to be checked on each quote and policy. 8,11,17

Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 28,45,46,47

AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 45

Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 28,30,31,32,33

Servicing and renewals

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8

Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 38,39

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 42

Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 39

Fees and compensation

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 40,41

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 40

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 39

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 44,28

Claims assistance

Coterie accepts standard and surplus-lines claim reports online and standard reports by phone. It asks for the policy number, named insured, loss date, event description and carrier name, then assigns a claims representative to investigate under the policy terms. 11,8

Coterie's policyholder page says its team will reach out around two business days after an online claim report, while the claims page says to expect contact within three to five business days. The claims page gives no standard settlement timeline. 10,11

Coterie directs cyber claim reports through its normal intake and says it works with Cyberscout on the investigation. Workplace-violence reports also start with Coterie before a specialty partner handles the response. These service descriptions do not establish that an event is covered. 11,15,16,8

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 43

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 44,34,45
