CFC vs Coterie Insurance

Compare CFC’s technology coverage with Coterie’s agent-distributed small-business policies when office risks and software liability overlap.

Introduction

A small software consultancy leasing its first office may need both premises protection and insurance for mistakes in its work. CFC’s technology package and Coterie’s small-business products address different parts of that discussion: CFC describes technology E&O with cyber, while Coterie’s core offering is BOP, general liability and miscellaneous professional liability through agents. The question is whether the proposed policies complement one another or actually cover the same professional exposure. 2 31

Key Differences Between CFC and Coterie

Two Agent Channels with Different Product Starting Points

Coterie is an MGA and platform for licensed agents and distribution partners, not a storefront where the business independently selects a market panel. Its agent workflow uses business name, address and industry to prefill a quote. CFC also supplies a broker channel through Connect, but its technology application asks for detailed activities, contracts, security and IP information. A faster initial data entry step would not establish equivalent underwriting or coverage. 35 34 6 3

Ask the agent to describe what is being submitted as the insured profession. “Consulting” should not obscure software implementation, hosting or managed services when those activities matter to the risk. Coterie’s MPL guide is for listed service professions; CFC’s form specifically explores technology activities. Neither record proves acceptance of this particular consultancy. 43 3

A Cyber Endorsement Is Not Automatically a Technology Package

Coterie markets cyber as an optional endorsement alongside its core policies. CFC describes cyber, E&O and media/IP sections in its US technology brochure. Compare the cyber extension’s limits and insured events with the combined proposal, while separately checking professional-liability coverage for client financial losses. The shared catalogue cannot turn an optional endorsement into an equivalent standalone policy. 41 44 2

Coterie’s BOP addresses property and liability, so an office-focused proposal needs its own property schedule. Its policyholder FAQ says each business location requires a separate policy. If the consultancy adds a second office, clarify how locations and shared professional work are insured rather than assuming one dashboard means one policy. 33 39

Eligibility and Recurring Costs Need Product-Level Checks

Coterie’s broad national marketing and its MPL guide disagree on geographic scope; the record preserves the exclusions in the product guide. CFC’s current California technology route also remains unestablished in the reviewed materials. For a Bay Area buyer, ask for an actual eligible proposal rather than extrapolating from either producer’s reach. 1 4

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 34,36,43

Coterie discloses policy and payment fees and a possible Manage My Risk Program fee. CFC’s reviewed technology documents do not provide an equivalent complete fee schedule. Compare the agent’s total invoices and renewal arrangements; different disclosure detail does not establish which proposal costs less. 37 2 6

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Have the agent identify whether the work belongs in miscellaneous professional liability or technology E&O, with hosting and implementation activities expressly addressed. 43 3
  • Compare the selected cyber endorsement with the proposed CFC cyber sections, including response services, sublimits and claims reporting. 44 2
  • Verify the office locations, state eligibility, renewal charges and optional risk-program fees before binding. 39 37 4

Service Comparison

CFC vs Coterie: documented services and availability

CriteriaCFCCoterie Insurance
Business role

CFC is a specialist insurance provider operating an MGA model: a managing general agent performs underwriting functions for insurance capacity providers. Its disclosures identify CFC Underwriting Limited and the U.S. producer CFC USA, Inc.; the CFC brand should not be treated as the name of every policy’s insurer. 5,4

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 30,35,48

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 37,30,51,52

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 30,48,49,51

Application process

The U.S. technology application asks a senior staff member to complete it and return it to the company’s insurance broker. It requests revenue, funding, subsidiaries, products, major contracts, security controls, IP procedures and claims history. CFC’s Connect portal separately supports broker trading and describes a broker appointment process. 3,6

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 34,35,31

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 35,37

Availability

CFC reports that CFC USA, Inc. holds producer licenses in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., plus excess and surplus lines authorization in California, Georgia, New York and Texas. It identifies its California licensing name as CFC General Insurance Agency, Inc. This is CFC’s disclosure, not an independently checked California license record or confirmation of product eligibility. 4

CFC’s January 2026 U.S. management-liability brochure lists California-domiciled business and standalone employment practices liability under risks it declines. This restriction is specific to the described management-liability offering; it does not establish a California exclusion for every CFC product. 11

The reviewed U.S. technology page, brochure and application do not establish the currently available admitted or surplus-lines route for a particular California startup. CFC announced admitted technology E&O in 2023, but the reviewed materials do not supply a current California product eligibility schedule. 1,2,3,29

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 36,37,47

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 46,47

Servicing and renewals

CFC says its cyber service includes threat monitoring and alerts, a response app and round-the-clock technical incident support. These are company-described services; access, scope and any conditions should be checked against the proposed policy. 7

The reviewed Connect and technology application pages do not specify a customer-facing renewal timetable, certificate turnaround or dedicated account-management commitment for California technology buyers. Confirm those arrangements with the placing broker. 6,3

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 39,37

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 39

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 37

Fees and compensation

The reviewed U.S. technology brochure, application and Connect page do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, producer commission rate, broker fee or complete schedule of policy charges. Request a written breakdown of premium, taxes, fees and intermediary compensation before purchase. 2,3,6

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 37

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 37

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 38,37
