Armilla vs Pie Insurance

Separate payroll-based workers’ compensation from liability and warranties for an AI product.

Introduction

Hiring employees and launching an AI product can create two insurance workstreams at once. Pie focuses on small-business workers’ compensation, with affiliated carriers writing that business. Armilla markets liability and warranties for AI performance. These are ordinarily complementary purchasing questions: the proposed AI contract does not resolve employee-injury coverage, and a workers’ compensation purchase does not establish protection for model outputs. 11 13 2

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Armilla Shines

  • Dedicated liability coverage for AI model and agent failures 3
  • Model assessments with remediation support and optional retesting 5

Where Pie Insurance Shines

  • Small businesses can start a workers’ compensation quote directly online or through an insurance agent. 10,9,11
  • Workers’ compensation payment options include pay-as-you-go using reported payroll, with no initial deposit. 25,26

Key Differences Between Armilla and Pie Insurance

Different Information Drives Each Quote

Pie’s public process starts with location and describes payroll and class-code inputs. Armilla begins with an AI risk assessment. A growing team should therefore maintain an employee/payroll submission and a separate model/use-case submission, rather than expecting either application to describe the whole company’s risks. 14 11 2

Pie also markets selected BOP, cyber and professional-liability products through outside carriers. Those are not automatically written by its workers’ compensation insurers, and their presence does not establish a substitute for Armilla’s AI scope. Ask for a separate proposed form if considering Pie’s partner products for the technology exposure. 13 16 17 3

Payroll Reconciliation and Model Retesting Are Different Costs

Pie offers pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation based on reported payroll without an initial deposit, but still requires an annual premium audit. The audit can change the final premium. Armilla offers optional monitoring and retesting as models change; the reviewed pages do not establish whether that work is included in insurance premium. Budget the ongoing obligations separately instead of comparing an initial payment with an annual AI proposal. 26 27 5 7

Use the Right Reporting Channel for the Loss

Pie publishes workplace-injury reporting instructions, but its public state and claims-handler descriptions are not fully reconciled. Armilla’s complete notice procedure and administrator remain unresolved in the reviewed pages. A personnel incident and an AI customer allegation should not be routed through a single assumed contact merely because finance bought both products. 28 29 19 2

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Confirm all employee states and classifications in the Pie proposal, including the current carrier and claims administrator for each location. 19 29
  • Record payroll reporting, audit and payment charges separately from Armilla assessment, retesting, premium and warranty costs. 25 27 7
  • For any partner cyber/E&O quote, obtain the issuer and AI wording; for Armilla, resolve California access and whether the instrument is insurance or a warranty. 13 1 2

Service Comparison

Armilla vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaArmillaPie Insurance
Business role

Armilla markets AI liability insurance, performance warranties and model assessments. It describes its insurance operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with underwriting responsibilities, and names Armilla Insurance Services as a Lloyd’s coverholder. These descriptions do not make Armilla the risk-bearing insurer. 3,1,6

Florida’s corporate registry lists Armilla Insurance Services Inc., a Delaware corporation. This establishes a corporate identity, not an insurance license or authority to place a California risk. 8

Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 10,13,11,15,16,17,18

Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 12,32,30

Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 13,33

Access to insurers

Armilla names certain underwriters at Lloyd’s for its affirmative AI liability insurance. Its product brief also names Chaucer, Axis Capital and Convex as backing partners, without identifying the contracting insurer or syndicate for an individual quote. 1,3

The warranty brief names Chaucer Group, Greenlight Re and Swiss Re as backing partners. It does not identify the legal warranty issuer, the buyer’s direct rights against a backing insurer, or a California-specific warranty contract. 4

Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 13,30,31,32

AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 30

Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 13,15,16,17,18

Fees and compensation

Armilla advertises commissions to brokers without publishing rates on the reviewed broker page. Its website terms allow service fees but do not provide an insurance-specific fee schedule. Premiums, assessment costs and any broker or policy charges need an itemized quote. 6,7

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 25,26

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 25

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 24

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 29,13

Servicing and renewals

Armilla Verified evaluates model performance, fairness, security and robustness. Armilla describes scoping, testing, remediation support and an internal report, with a badge conditional on meeting benchmarks. Optional monitoring and retesting are offered as models change. 5

The reviewed assessment and insurance pages do not disclose insurance renewal procedures or whether ongoing model monitoring is included in the premium. Optional assessment support should be priced and scoped separately in the proposal. 5,2

Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 23,24

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 27

Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 24

Claims assistance

Armilla describes liability claims reported during the policy period, subject to limits and exclusions. Its homepage offers incident coordination, but the reviewed pages do not name a claims administrator or set out a complete claim-notification procedure. No claims-handling quality has been established. 2,1

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 28

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 29,19,30
