What Is Counterpart Insurance?

Counterpart describes a broker-focused platform for small businesses and lists management and professional liability programs. Buyers should compare the named profession, carrier, state, policy wording and any package component on the actual quote. 1,2

Counterpart describes itself as an insurance technology company focused on management and professional liability for small businesses, with a broker audience and online tools. Its product pages name private-company and nonprofit D&O, employment-practices, fiduciary, crime, professional liability, allied healthcare, architects and engineers, contractors, and lawyers programs. Eligibility and coverage depend on the particular program, applicant, state and issued policy. 1 2

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Products tailored to different professions. Counterpart publishes separate material for miscellaneous professional liability, allied healthcare, architects and engineers/contractors, and lawyers. A buyer can use the stated profession and services to ask whether the proposed form fits the actual work. The allied-health page names home health, transport, physical therapy, staffing, urgent care and imaging among its classes; its telehealth feature stays within that product. These are marketing descriptions, not an underwriting decision or a promise that every class qualifies. 14 15 16 17
  • Broker workflow information. A help article describes a broker dashboard with application statuses, while a professional-liability page describes broker renewal tools and access to specialized underwriters. These are company-described services; research did not test the dashboard or verify turnaround times. 7 8
  • Online quote entry point, with an unresolved route. The current homepage shows “Quote Online,” but its linked application page required JavaScript and did not load during review. A separate February 2025 help article describes a wholesale-broker referral route. Public material reviewed does not show whether a buyer can complete a quote or bind online, so ask the broker which steps require their involvement. 1 5 6

Cons

  • Coverage descriptions are not policy terms. Counterpart’s pages show profession-specific examples and, on some pages, illustrative limits, retentions and premiums. Those examples are not quotes or guaranteed terms. The reviewed public pages do not establish all broker, platform or policy fees, so ask for each charge in writing. Check the application answers, declarations, endorsements, exclusions, sublimits, retroactive date, and any claims-made reporting requirements in the actual policy. 14 17 3
  • General liability is described in program context. Counterpart says its miscellaneous professional liability can be offered alone or packaged with general liability, and its lawyers liability page describes GL alongside professional coverage. Ask whether GL is offered as a companion in the quoted program; this does not establish a broad standalone commercial general liability policy. 14 17
  • Features do not necessarily mean separate policies. The lawyers page discusses AI and technology-product claims and media/advertising claims in the context of lawyers professional liability. Its allied-health page discusses virtual care. Ask how those features are worded and whether limits are shared or separate; these descriptions do not establish separate technology E&O, media or telehealth policies. 17 15
  • Carrier and state availability vary by placement. Counterpart names underwriting companies but the reviewed public materials do not map a single carrier to each product, state or policy. Its license page says availability may vary by state. Confirm the legal issuer, admitted or surplus-lines status, and applicable terms on the quote and policy. 2 3
  • Announced excess coverage is not a quote. A July 2026 press item announces excess coverage across product lines but does not establish current eligibility, terms or availability for a buyer. Ask whether the actual quote includes excess coverage and which policy supplies it. 4
  • Claims-speed advertising lacks a disclosed method. Counterpart says it closes claims twice as fast as the industry average but the homepage does not state the sample, period, claim population or calculation. Treat that as a company claim and ask who adjusts the claim and which entity is responsible for payment under the policy. 1 3

How the Process Works

A Counterpart help article dated February 6, 2025 tells applicants to work through a wholesale broker. A more recent homepage also offers a “Quote Online” link, but the destination could not be reviewed beyond a JavaScript-required error. Counterpart separately describes broker-submitted applications and dashboard statuses from submission through underwriting review and quote. Its article says binding requires a signed application and any required subjectivities. Ask whether a broker must submit the application, which documents remain outstanding, and what confirms coverage is bound. No quote, purchase or binding workflow was tested. 6 5 7

Company and Insurance Roles

Counterpart identifies Counterpart Insurance Services, Inc. as its wholly owned U.S. subsidiary and reports National Producer Number 19374834 and producer and surplus-lines-broker authority in 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is a provider-published disclosure; product availability may vary. The company says policy obligations belong to the issuing carrier. Its public pages name Aspen Specialty, Evanston (Markel) and Westfield capacity, without a complete product-by-state issuer map. Confirm the named insurer on the quote and policy. In May 2026, Counterpart described a future first-time plan to retain risk through Counterpart Insurance Company; that announcement does not establish current policy issuance. 3 2 4

What to Ask Before Buying

  • Which exact legal entity issues this policy, and is the placement admitted or surplus lines in my state?
  • Does the quote cover my actual profession, services, locations, subcontractors and revenue mix?
  • Is general liability included, optional or separately quoted, and does it share limits with professional liability?
  • Are AI/technology, media, virtual-care or other described features included by endorsement, subject to a sublimit, or excluded?
  • What are the deductible or retention, exclusions, retroactive date, extended reporting options, notice requirements and claims contact?
  • Which application documents or subjectivities remain, and what written confirmation shows that coverage has bound?

Review Score

Not enough ratings

The searches reviewed did not establish a customer-average rating or provider-level review count for Counterpart. NAIC complaint information is tied to the actual insurer, coverage line, state and period; a brand-wide score would misattribute that data.[1][2][3][5]

Broker Spot Score

Not Rated

No current Broker Spot Score is published. The evidence identifies provider-reported licensing for Counterpart Insurance Services, Inc., names capacity partners without a complete policy placement map, and does not establish an entity-specific conduct record. Missing information is not a negative finding, and an insurer rating or carrier relationship is not a Counterpart score.
