Retailers we help

  • Shop and boutique owners

Customers visit daily, stock sits on your shelves, and your lease sets insurance requirements.

  • Pop-up and market sellers

Moving stock and displays between markets and events raises transit and liability questions.

  • Brands that design or import products

You design or import what you sell, so the product wording has to match your products and channels, marketplaces included.

  • Ecommerce and fulfillment-heavy retailers

Checkout and customer accounts hold identifying and payment-related data, and your stock sits in warehouses you may not run.

Insurance Retailers usually carry

The policies companies like yours are usually asked for, and when each one comes up.

  • General liability

Customers enter a shop, pop-up or showroom, or staff host demonstrations and pickup.

  • Product liability

You design, import, distribute or resell products, including marketplace sales.

  • Commercial property

Inventory, fixtures, equipment or customer property is stored at a shop, stockroom or fulfillment site.

  • Tools, equipment and inland marine

Stock, samples or equipment moves between store, warehouse, event and fulfillment locations.

  • Workers’ compensation

You hire store, warehouse, delivery or seasonal employees.

  • Cyber liability

Checkout, loyalty, ecommerce or customer-account systems hold payment-related or identifying data.

When Retailers need insurance

  • 01

    You’re opening a shop, pop-up or showroom

List customer visits, demonstrations and order pickup in the general liability description, and check the lease’s insurance clause before you sign.

  • 02

You design, import or resell products

Check that the product wording covers your actual products, brands, sales channels and territories.

  • 03

Inventory is stored in more than one place

Schedule each site, stock value, fixture and cause of loss, and note who handles the goods in between.

  • 04

You’re hiring for the holiday season

Report each work state, store or warehouse location and job duty for workers’ compensation, including seasonal staff.

  • 05

Checkout and customer accounts hold payment data

Ask how cyber terms treat customer and employee data, payment vendors and system interruption.

Questions from Retailers

Also known as retail store insurance, retail business insurance, store insurance, shop insurance, boutique insurance, ecommerce insurance, ecommerce business insurance and online store insurance.

What does retail store insurance usually include?

General liability for customers in the shop, product liability for what you sell, property for fixtures and stock, inland marine for goods at pop-ups or in transit, workers’ compensation, and cyber for online orders. Spot compares them as one submission.

Are shop injuries and product injuries covered the same way?

No. A visit to your store is a premises question, while an injury from an item you sold is a product question, and the two can sit under different terms. Spot describes your premises and your products separately so each gets its own answer.

Does insurance pay for a recall we must report?

Not unless a form says so. A reporting duty and an insurance payment are separate questions, and product or general liability wording shouldn’t be read as paying for a recall. Spot asks whether a recall form is available for your products and which notification, repair, replacement and logistics costs it addresses.

What do insurers need from a retailer?

Your store and stockroom addresses, stock values, a product list showing what you design or import, your sales channels, where staff work, and your lease or marketplace agreements.

Our broker set up our store’s policy package. Will Spot work with that broker?

Yes. Spot can work with that broker on your next renewal, or help you switch to one who places more retail and ecommerce business. In both cases a broker places the coverage, and Spot takes no commissions on premiums.
