Why Is It Called Inland Marine Insurance?

“Inland marine” distinguishes this specialized property category from ocean marine; it does not mean ordinary boat insurance.

The California Department of Insurance explains that inland marine addresses transportation-related property exposures and distinguishes it from boating transportation, which it associates with ocean marine. The category now includes more than goods moving over land: the guide also lists equipment floaters and installation floaters.

The label is an insurance-line name, not a promise about what any one policy covers. Waterborne exposures can be excluded from an inland-marine form or added only through specific wording. If your concern is boats, cargo, tools, or property at a temporary jobsite, check the actual form and endorsements for that exposure rather than relying on the line name.
