Maine trucking insurance: check the 2026 intrastate vehicle class
Maine now lists a $750,000 combined single limit for intrastate commercial motor vehicles, effective for policies issued, continued or renewed from January 1, 2026. The statutory definition includes 26,001-pound weight thresholds, buses and certain placarded hazardous-material vehicles. Section 1611 still separately describes $350,000 for freight/merchandise in intrastate-exempt or federally exempt service, so a carrier whose operation might fit either description should confirm the applicable paragraph with BMV before relying on a limit. 1,2,3
What Is Trucking?
Trucking coverage can address liability, damage to your trucks and cargo losses, but one quote may not include all three. If you haul goods for customers or yourself, compare those protections and check whether the quote needs motor-carrier or other commercial auto coverage. Read the national Trucking guide.
Maine Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| 2026 intrastate commercial-motor-vehicle limit | Maine Title 29-A §1611(2)(G) sets a $750,000 combined single limit for intrastate commercial motor vehicles. P.L. 2025, ch. 107 applies to policies issued, delivered, continued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. 1,3 |
| Check statutory vehicle definition | A Maine commercial motor vehicle includes a vehicle/combination with GCWR of at least 26,001 pounds when the towed unit is over 10,000 pounds, a bus, any size vehicle transporting placarded hazardous material or listed select agents, or a vehicle with GVWR/GVW at least 26,001 pounds. 2 |
| Exempt-service freight has a separate listed amount | Section 1611(2)(A) lists $350,000 CSL for for-hire vehicles carrying freight/merchandise but not passengers in intrastate-exempt or federally exempt service, except as provided in paragraph E. The overlap with new paragraph G is a classification question; confirm with Maine BMV for your route, vehicle and policy effective date. 1,3 |
What to Watch for in Maine
Renewal date can move the new standard into a policy
The 2025 Act applies to policies executed, delivered, issued for delivery, continued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, and treats all policies as renewed no later than the next yearly anniversary. Match the quote and filing to the policy term, not just when the truck was purchased. 3
Do not choose between $750,000 and $350,000 by shorthand
Maine’s statute includes both a new intrastate-CMV provision and a separate freight/merchandise provision for exempt service. Vehicle weight/hazmat status and the route/service exemption matter. Ask BMV to identify the applicable subsection if categories appear to overlap. 1,2
These limits address vehicle liability, not shipment value
Maine §1611(5) describes the required policy or bond as liability for damages for which the vehicle owner may be liable because of vehicle operation. It does not establish cargo-in-transit insurance or physical damage to the carrier’s truck. Quote those exposures separately. 1
Who Regulates Insurance in Maine

Maine Bureau of Insurance
The Maine Bureau of Insurance licenses producers and companies, enforces Maine insurance laws, and investigates property and casualty complaints including commercial coverage complaints. You can use its state lookup or complaint service to check a license or raise an insurance issue. 4,5,6
Surplus-lines tax and stamping office
Reported tax rate: 3% of gross direct premium when Maine is the insured's home state Maine charges 3% of gross direct premium when it is the insured's home state; your broker handles the tax and may include it with the premium. Surplus-lines policies are outside Maine guaranty-association protection. Maine generally requires a diligent search, with an exempt-commercial-purchaser exception requiring broker disclosure and the purchaser's written request. 7,8,9
Providers With Documented State Licenses
No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Maine
- Does the unit meet Maine’s CMV definition by GVWR, GCWR, bus status or placarded freight, and is the movement intrastate?
- Does §1611(2)(G) or the exempt-service provision in (2)(A) govern this exact vehicle and route, and when does the current policy renew?
- What separate cargo and own-truck protection is quoted beyond the required public-liability policy?
