Georgia trucking insurance: match authority, filings and cargo
If your Georgia operation needs a Department of Public Safety carrier certificate, the insurance evidence must name that applicant or holder alone; Form E and Form H address different risks. A separate state rule requires commercial vehicles to register before operating and treats a liability-insurance lapse as ending registration validity. The DPS rule’s dollar schedule is a fallback only where another provision in its chapter has not set amounts. 1,2
What Is Trucking?
Trucking coverage can address liability, damage to your trucks and cargo losses, but one quote may not include all three. If you haul goods for customers or yourself, compare those protections and check whether the quote needs motor-carrier or other commercial auto coverage. Read the national Trucking guide.
Georgia Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| DPS certificate insurance filing | For a certificate under DPS Subchapter 570-38, file evidence of the insurance required for that carrier. Do not rely on insurance in another entity’s name or jointly held coverage. 1 |
| Form E and Form H | DPS recognizes Form E for bodily-injury/property-damage liability and Form H for cargo, when properly completed and within the rule’s conditions. These forms evidence separate protections. 1 |
| Conditional fallback schedule | Only where the Department may set amounts and this chapter has not set them elsewhere, the rule lists $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury, $50,000 third-party property damage excluding cargo, and cargo limits of $25,000 per vehicle/$50,000 aggregate at one time and place. Confirm which amount applies to your authority. 1 |
What to Watch for in Georgia
Use the exact carrier entity
For the DPS certificate rule, the policy must be solely in the applicant’s or holder’s name; the insurance form must use its current full business name and physical address. A lapse immediately voids the certificate under that rule. A later reinstatement of insurance does not erase the lapse or any agency order. 1
Do not treat the fallback as a universal truck limit
The stated schedule applies only when amounts are not established elsewhere in Chapter 570-38. It is not a blanket minimum for every Georgia vehicle, route or federal authority. Match commodity, vehicle and certificate class before relying on any number. 1
Check both authority and vehicle registration
Georgia defines intrastate for-hire carriage by carrying others’ cargo for compensation and defines private carriage as carrying one’s own cargo. A carrier also must register with the Department before commercial-vehicle operation; interstate liability proof may be filed with FMCSA, while intrastate proof has Georgia options. Ask which filings cover each power unit. 2

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office
Reported tax rate: 4% of total premium when Georgia is the home state Georgia charges 4% on the total premium written and received by a surplus-lines broker when Georgia is the insured’s home state. Current fee treatment is not described here because the Department’s latest fee bulletin could not be retrieved as readable text; ask your broker for the policy-declaration and tax breakdown. This record does not state a Georgia-specific guaranty-fund conclusion. 6
Providers With Documented State Licenses
No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Georgia
- Which of my routes and loads require Georgia DPS certificate authority, Georgia commercial-vehicle registration, FMCSA authority, or more than one?
- Will the insurer file Form E for public liability and Form H for cargo under the exact legal name used in my authority records?
- Which provision sets my applicable liability and cargo limits, and what commodity, vehicle or route facts drive that result?
Trucking in Georgia: FAQ
Does Georgia truck liability cover the load? 1
The state’s forms distinguish Form E liability evidence from Form H cargo evidence. The legal filing rules do not establish what a particular issued policy pays; review the cargo form, policy and endorsements for covered property, limits and exclusions. 1
Can I use another company’s policy for a Georgia DPS certificate? 1
Rule 570-38-2-.05 says the applicant or holder must maintain insurance solely in its own name and may not rely on coverage in another person or entity’s name or jointly held coverage. Confirm the exact named insured with the insurer and Department. 1
