Trucking Insurance in District of Columbia

A truck registered in DC must keep vehicle insurance continuously during registration, with minimums of $25,000/$50,000 third-party bodily liability and $10,000 property damage, plus required uninsured-motorist coverage. If you base an IRP fleet in DC, the 2026 manual requires proof at registration and renewal; IRP does not itself grant operating authority. 1,2

What Is Trucking?

Trucking coverage can address liability, damage to your trucks and cargo losses, but one quote may not include all three. If you haul goods for customers or yourself, compare those protections and check whether the quote needs motor-carrier or other commercial auto coverage. Read the national Trucking guide.

What to Watch for in District of Columbia

  • Keep Insurance Active While The DC Tags Remain

DC DMV requires continuous insurance for as long as the vehicle is registered; if coverage ends, surrender the tags and registration immediately. A lapse can suspend registration and fines accrue, so coordinate any policy cancellation with the return of the vehicle credentials. 1,3

  • Treat DC Minimums As A Registration Floor

DC's $25,000/$50,000 bodily-liability and $10,000 property-damage amounts are vehicle-registration minimums, not a determination of the limit needed for a commercial freight contract or motor-carrier authority. Ask for the carrier's operating class, route, cargo, and any non-DC filing before selecting limits. 1

  • Check Whether Your Fleet Needs DC IRP Registration

The 2026 manual describes apportioned vehicles operating for profit in two or more IRP jurisdictions with a power unit over 26,000 pounds, three or more axles, or a qualifying combination over 26,000 pounds. If your fleet is based in DC, obtain insurance evidence before registering or renewing the apportioned unit. 2

  • Do Not Treat IRP Plates As Operating Authority

DC DMV explicitly says IRP registration does not exempt a carrier from obtaining operating authority. Confirm your carrier authority separately from the apportioned plate and cab card before dispatching a multistate load. 2

Who Regulates Insurance in District of Columbia

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office

Reported tax rate: Generally 2% of gross premium, including qualifying placement fees When the District is the insured’s home state, surplus-lines agents and brokers generally owe a 2% tax on gross premium, including necessary fees incidental to placement when separately itemized. An agent or broker procuring insurance on behalf of the District government is exempt for that government business; claiming the exemption requires identifying its allocation in the required affidavit and does not waive other statutory duties. Ask the broker which taxes and fees your agreement passes through to you. DISB generally requires a diligent effort to place risks with authorized insurers. For a purchaser meeting the federal exempt-commercial-purchaser definition, the broker may skip that search only after disclosing that insurance may or may not be available from the admitted market, which may provide greater protection with more regulatory oversight, followed by the purchaser’s written request for nonadmitted placement. This record does not state a District-specific guaranty-fund conclusion. 7,9,10,11,4

Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
