Garage Liability Insurance in Indiana
Indiana dealer license applications require liability insurance covering the established place of business, with minimum limits of $100,000/$300,000/$50,000; membership in a state-regulated risk retention group is an allowed alternative. A transport operator’s certificate must also specify the number of transport-plate sets, which makes the plate schedule a concrete part of the quote. 1,2
What Is Garage Liability?
Garage liability can address injury and property-damage claims from auto repair and related garage operations. If you run a repair or service shop, check separately whether customer cars in your care need garagekeepers coverage for vehicle damage. Read the national Garage liability guide.
Indiana Requirements

What to Watch for in Indiana
Name the Established Place
Indiana’s application proof must cover the dealer’s established place of business. If your repair bays, customer parking, storage yard, or additional lot is at another address, ask whether it needs a separate license and how the insurer wants it scheduled. 1
Count Transport-Plate Sets
Indiana requires a transport operator’s certificate to specify the number of transport-plate sets requested or approved. The state defines this class to include businesses furnishing drive-away or tow-away transport, and businesses preparing and delivering newly purchased vehicles to their base locations; give the broker the plate count and both types of work. 2
Avoid a License-Period Gap
Indiana requires the minimum-limit policy throughout the license period and says the dealer license will be suspended during a lapse. Coordinate renewals and replacement certificates before the old policy expires, and ask how a disputed or delayed cancellation notice is handled. 1
Quote Customer Vehicles Separately
Indiana’s regulator describes liability covering the established business place but does not say that this statutory filing includes customer cars in your care. List repair, towing, overnight parking, and test drives and ask the broker what the contract says for each. 1,2
Who Regulates Insurance in Indiana

Indiana Department of Insurance
The Indiana Department of Insurance licenses and regulates insurance companies and producers, reviews rates and policies, and investigates consumer complaints. Its Consumer Services Division accepts complaints and the Department provides company and license searches. 3,4,5
Surplus-lines tax and stamping office
Reported tax rate: 2.5% of gross premium when Indiana is the home state Indiana’s surplus-lines premium tax is 2.5% when Indiana is the insured’s home state. Surplus-lines policies are outside Indiana guaranty-fund protection; before you buy, confirm the insurer’s identity and financial strength with your broker. 6,7,8,9
Providers With Documented State Licenses
No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
