Newfront vs
Pie Insurance
How Newfront’s workers’ compensation program design differs from Pie Insurance’s small-business coverage, payroll billing and policy administration.
Introduction
Newfront is a broker with a workers’ compensation practice that evaluates program funding and supports claims management. Pie Insurance sells and administers small-business workers’ compensation written by affiliated carriers, with direct and agency purchase routes. An employer choosing between their proposals should separate three decisions: who insures the workers, how premiums are paid and how much financial risk the employer retains. 15 39 36

Key Differences Between Newfront and Pie Insurance
Payroll Billing and Retained Claim Risk
An employer adding a second shift and expecting payroll to vary during the year has a cash-flow question that is not the same as retaining claim risk. Pie’s pay-as-you-go arrangement bases monthly payments on reported payroll and advertises no initial deposit. That offers a specific cash-flow method to evaluate. It does not, by itself, describe a larger deductible or make the employer its own insurer. 52 39
Newfront describes conventional programs alongside large-deductible and loss-adjusted premium structures. Those alternatives can change the employer’s obligation when claims occur, not merely when it pays installments. Ask for a comparison showing premiums, possible retained claims, collateral and administrative charges under the proposed structure. Do not compare Pie’s payroll billing and Newfront’s risk-financing work as if they were competing names for the same feature. 15 28 52
Newfront also arranges conventional coverage, so considering its service does not commit a buyer to a complex financing arrangement. Conversely, Pie’s focused program can be approached through an agency, so evaluating Pie does not necessarily require abandoning an advisor. Ask about actual market access; the reviewed sources do not establish that Newfront can place this employer with Pie. 15 36
Premium Audits and Cost Drivers
Pie requires an annual premium audit based on actual payroll and may request employee, expense and subcontractor documentation. Its payroll-based payment option does not remove the need to keep that evidence. For the second shift, ensure job duties and payroll are recorded accurately from the start, then establish who will reconcile any disputed classification or adjustment. 53 52
With Newfront, request the selected insurer’s audit rules and the broker’s role in reviewing the result. Its workers’ compensation practice describes program design and claims support, but those descriptions are not the audit terms for an individual policy. In either proposal, a payroll increase and a change in retained-loss responsibility should appear as different cost drivers. 15 3 53
Claims Support and Claim Decisions
Newfront describes helping select and oversee claims administrators and adjusters, reviewing reserves and settlement authority, and coordinating prevention and recovery work. That is relevant if the employer wants a continuing claims-management assignment, particularly alongside retained-risk financing. Request the specific services and reporting cadence instead of assuming every item on the practice page is included. 15
Pie publishes direct workplace-injury intake and identifies state-specific handling by Pie or CorVel. Its handler count is not fully reconciled with its advertised footprint. Ask for the administrator on the actual state kit and policy; do not interpret the incomplete public count as evidence of absent claim service. Newfront’s advocacy and Pie’s administration are different functions, and neither proves a better claim outcome. 54 55 34
For a supervisor reporting an injury, the practical deliverable is a clear notice route that survives an employee or broker change. Identify who receives the first report, who communicates with the carrier and who handles urgent questions outside normal office hours. Pie asks for prompt injury reporting; Newfront’s pre-loss protocol service can be evaluated against that same operational need. 54 34
Location Eligibility and Program Cost
Pie’s state-page count differs from other company materials. Newfront advertises broader brokerage services but does not publish a complete product-by-state schedule. If the new shift or site involves another state, give both the locations, duties and payroll distribution and obtain the issuing insurer’s acceptance. Producer licensing and a marketing footprint do not settle product eligibility. 45 47 27 1
Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 51
Pie also publishes several payment schedules and charges for waiver requests. Newfront’s business-insurance compensation requires an account-specific disclosure. Price the actual annual program, including the broker’s services, payment charges and any retained-loss or collateral obligation. Newfront’s benefits-service terms are a separate agreement and should not be applied to this workers’ compensation decision. 51 50 8 15 26
What to Confirm in Quotes
- A cash-flow and risk schedule: show payroll-based versus conventional billing, deposits, retained claims, collateral and the maximum obligations established by each proposed agreement. 52 15
- The audit process: identify required payroll and subcontractor evidence, the insurer’s adjustment rules and who helps resolve an error. 53 3
- A site and handler list: confirm insurer acceptance by work state and the claims administrator for each location. 45 55 15
- A priced service assignment: separate broker compensation, policy/payment charges, claims oversight and loss-prevention work; record the first-report route for supervisors. 51 54 8 34
Service Comparison
Newfront vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Newfront | Pie Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Customer focus | Newfront is an insurance brokerage for businesses, from early-stage companies to established enterprises. It helps buyers arrange business insurance, manage employee benefits, and coordinate risk management with a specialist team and online tools. Its practices include technology, life sciences, construction, financial services, and public-sector organizations. 1,8,24 | Pie markets its workers’ compensation program to small businesses, both directly and through local, regional and national insurance agencies. 36,37 |
| Application process | The public buying path starts with a consultation request. The form asks for your role, company, contact details, industry, employee count, and the service you need. It does not display a premium or bind coverage. 9 Newfront describes assembling a team for your industry, reviewing your business and risk exposures, and presenting that information to underwriters. Its technology practice describes onboarding and renewal reviews, with additional market shopping when appropriate. The reviewed public pages do not promise a universal quote or binding turnaround. 8,29,9 Some online services may require you to appoint Newfront as broker of record—the broker designated to service your insurance. Ask which tools and services are included before signing that appointment. 3 Life-science clients can use Newfront’s Clinical Trial Portal to check country requirements, upload documents, and request quotes. The public description does not establish automatic approval or a guaranteed time to receive coverage. 18 | A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 36,35,37 The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 40,37 Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 37,35 |
| Availability | Newfront advertises U.S. and international brokerage services, but the reviewed pages do not provide a product-by-state eligibility schedule. Its global service page describes working through the Worldwide Broker Network and arranging local coverage. Confirm the country, local broker, insurer, and product for each location. 1,27 Newfront’s footer displays license number 0H55918. Its linked license list required Google sign-in, and California’s public lookup did not return a usable record during this research. Current producer-license status was therefore not independently verified here; licensing alone would not establish availability of a particular policy. 1,7,6 | Pie’s dedicated state page and AM Best describe workers’ compensation in 40 states and Washington, D.C., but Pie’s homepage and January 2026 release say 39 states plus D.C. Confirm the business locations and class codes in the current quote or agent portal. 45,46,35,47,56 The reviewed BOP, cyber, general-liability and professional-liability pages do not publish a product-by-state availability table. Pie’s terms also say products are not available in every US area or situation. 41,42,44,43,38 |
| Servicing and renewals | Newfront says Navigator brings together policy documents, certificates, claims information, payment tools, and communication with the service team. Its Executive Risk page describes renewal submissions pre-filled with historical data and document sharing with access controls. 30,11 A policy or coverage change requested through Navigator remains preliminary until the applicable carrier approves it and provides written confirmation. A submitted request is not evidence that the new coverage is in force. 3 Newfront says its Partner Management tool is included in client service agreements at no additional cost. It tracks vendor certificates, expiration dates, compliance issues, and follow-up activity inside Navigator. This is a statement about that tool, not a promise of free brokerage services. 31 Newfront’s Contract Review tool extracts insurance requirements, compares them with current policies, provides source citations, and notifies the Newfront team. Its Coverage Gap Analysis tool supports the team’s policy reviews. These are company-described functions; the reviewed materials do not independently establish accuracy or prove that all gaps will be detected. 32,33 Newfront’s March 2026 privacy notice describes integration with WTW as ongoing and anticipates substantial integration by year-end, subject to legal and contractual limits. That is a stated plan, not confirmation that systems, data practices, or service agreements have already been unified. 4 | Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 49,50 Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 53 Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 50 |
| Fees and compensation | A standard business-insurance fee schedule, commission percentage, or premium range was not found in the reviewed business, consultation, and general-terms pages. Request an account-specific disclosure of brokerage fees, insurer commissions, other remuneration, and any separately billed services. 8,9,3 For Total Rewards, the order form sets compensation. The published terms allow insurer-paid commissions or client fees and disclose additional carrier compensation tied to the wider book of business. They also address non-cash compensation, retained unused carrier funds, and separate pass-through expenses. Newfront says supplemental commissions will not affect its recommendations. 26 Total Rewards agreements renew annually unless written nonrenewal notice is given at least 60 days in advance. Termination for convenience is allowed during renewal terms with 60 days’ written notice; the client must retain Newfront as broker of record through the current agreement term. Separately, a participating Block Strategy client ending the agreement for convenience during an active affected policy can owe an early-exit fee based on remaining premium savings. 26 | Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 51,52 Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 51 Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 50 Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 55,39 |
| Claims assistance | Newfront describes helping establish reporting protocols before a loss, reviewing how a policy may respond, and acting as the buyer’s liaison with the carrier. Its advocates address coverage-reservation and denial letters, counsel selection, vendor rates, reimbursement, and allocation disputes. This documents claims assistance, not a promise that a claim will be paid. 34 | Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 54 Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 55,45,56 |
