Coterie Insurance vs USI Insurance Services

Why Coterie’s agent-distributed MGA products are not a direct marketplace substitute for USI’s consultative brokerage.

Introduction

A company whose agent is quoting a Coterie business owner’s policy is not using the same channel as a company asking USI’s Technology practice to structure directors and officers, cargo, and cyber. Coterie is a managing general agent that distributes through appointed insurance agents, not a public storefront. USI is a licensed producer you appoint as broker of record; it does not issue the policy. Whether those roles can sit on the same account is a question for the quote, not a default arrangement. 1 31

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Coterie Insurance Shines

  • Agents can use prefilled business details to customize quotes and bind eligible small-business policies in one dashboard. 5,6,2
  • Policyholders can access documents, generate certificates, request changes and start claims online, with their agent handling coverage questions. 10,8

Where USI Insurance Services Shines

  • USI’s Technology practice says it works with software, hardware and related companies from early seed stage through IPO. 25,33,44
  • USI says it is customarily paid insurer commissions and may receive additional contingent compensation, with details available on request. 31

Key Differences Between Coterie and USI

Distribution Role

Coterie is reached through appointed agents, not a public checkout. Ask an agent whether Coterie appetite fits your class and location. USI’s published technology path is a consultative email to pcinquiries@usi.com or a local office. That does not tell you whether USI distributes Coterie products; ask in the proposal if that paper matters to you. 5 33

What the Core Product Set Is For

Coterie’s published core catalogue centers on general liability, business owner’s policies, and related professional liability. Directors and officers and workers’ compensation are not on that core list. USI’s property-casualty and technology pages list those lines as brokerage services. A missing Coterie product name is not proof no agent can obtain the line elsewhere; a Coterie quote by itself is also not a complete technology program. 2 32 33

How Quoting Works

Coterie’s agent platform is built for small-commercial indications with stated quote conditions. USI’s public site warns that its contact form is unsecured and is not a quote engine. Compare turnaround only after both sides have the same complete application package. 6 28

Geography and Coastal Limits

Coterie publishes availability and coastal business-owner’s-policy constraints that an agent must check. USI markets a U.S. office network “serving every state” without a product-by-state table. Confirm Coterie appetite for your class and ZIP, and confirm USI’s admitted versus surplus-lines route separately; an office in a state is not product eligibility. 18 27

Who Pays Whom

Coterie compensates the distributing agent under its programs. USI discloses insurer-paid commissions and possible contingent compensation on paper it places. If more than one producer is involved, ask each for written compensation on your account so you can see overlapping pay. 1 31

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Whether your current agent is appointed with Coterie for your class and location. 5
  • Which lines, if any, USI would place on Coterie paper versus other markets. 38
  • The gap list: D&O, workers’ compensation, cyber, cargo—named markets, not catalogue unions. 2 33
  • Coastal or moratorium rules if any location is near a Coterie restriction. 18

Service Comparison

Coterie vs USI: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoterie InsuranceUSI Insurance Services
Business role

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22

USI describes itself as a U.S. insurance brokerage and consulting firm that arranges property and casualty, employee benefits, personal risk, program, and retirement solutions. The reviewed official pages do not identify USI as the insurer that issues commercial policies. 25,24,31,44

USI’s commissions page states that, as a licensed insurance producer, it may advise on insurance contracts, sell insurance, and obtain coverages for clients. Privacy and staff materials identify the operating company as USI Insurance Services LLC. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. 31,30,45

On 31 August 2026, Aon plc announced a definitive agreement to acquire USI from KKR and other shareholders for a $17.0 billion purchase price, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals. Aon stated that Aon and USI will continue to operate independently until the closing date. The reviewed announcement does not establish that the transaction has closed. 44

Application process

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8

USI does not publish a self-serve commercial quote flow on the reviewed pages. Technology and P&C inquiries are directed to pcinquiries@usi.com or a local office. The contact page includes a website message box that USI warns is not secured in transit and should not be used for sensitive information. Small- and medium-sized management-liability inquiries are also directed to Select.Business@usi.com. No public binding timetable or online eligibility tool was found. 33,32,28,40

Coverage lines

Coterie's current core catalogue consists of a business owner's policy (BOP), standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability (MPL/E&O). A BOP combines liability with property coverage; the other two are distinct policies. 2,4,3,14

Coterie's December 2025 BOP guide states eligibility of up to $10 million in revenue and 50 employees, reduced to $5 million and 15 employees for contractors. It lists up to $1 million in building value and $500,000 in business personal property, with limits and availability still varying by state, industry and quote. 13,8

Coterie currently markets cyber, workplace violence, employment practices liability, restaurant, liquor liability and contractors equipment endorsements. Its BOP guide also lists optional hired and non-owned auto liability, equipment breakdown, drone liability and other property extensions. These are optional additions, not evidence of separate standalone policies. 12,13,15,16

Coterie's MPL is a claims-made professional liability policy for listed service professions. Its current guide says the basic policy includes a 60-day extended reporting period and offers longer periods for purchase; retroactive coverage and limits depend on the selected terms and eligibility. 14,8

Coterie's claims page expressly says it does not write workers' compensation or automobile policies. Hired and non-owned auto appears only as an optional liability endorsement in the BOP guide and should not be read as commercial auto physical-damage coverage. 11,13

USI’s Technology practice lists insurance placement for property; business income and contingent business income; worldwide cargo and stock; errors and omissions; product liability; directors and officers liability; network security / USI PrivaSafe; and international. Those labels describe brokerage services. Limits, exclusions, insurer, and whether a given startup qualifies remain in a quote and policy. 33,38

USI’s commercial property and casualty pages describe advice and placement on workers’ compensation, property, general liability, auto liability, umbrella/excess, executive and professional risks, cyber, environmental, product liability, and related claims and risk-control services. Other industry pages add employment practices, crime, fiduciary, professional E&O, kidnap and ransom, representations and warranties, medical professional (malpractice) liability, and required bonding in the healthcare practice. Availability and wording vary by client, insurer, and jurisdiction. 32,34,35,36,40

USI’s employee-benefits practice describes consulting to design, price, and administer employer benefit programs, including underwriting analytics, HR administration support, population health, compliance/healthcare reform guidance, pharmacy and ancillary consulting. The private-equity practice separately lists employee health and welfare insurance services after a transaction. These pages describe consulting and placement services, not a specific insured health plan or carrier. 37,35

Availability

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 7,8,18

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 5,7,14

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 17,18

USI states that it is headquartered at 100 Summit Lake Drive, Suite 400, Valhalla, New York, with more than 10,000 professionals across over 200 U.S. offices, and that it serves every state. That is a company description of its office network and service footprint. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular commercial product is admitted, surplus-lines, or otherwise available in California or any other named state. 27,25,28,24

A USI Insurance Services LLC staff biography lists a San Francisco office and prints CA DOI License # 0G11911. The reviewed usi.com practice pages do not state which commercial products are available to California-domiciled startups, whether placements are admitted or surplus lines, or which licensed entity would appear on a California policy. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. A California office address is not treated as product eligibility. 45,33,32,27

Fees and compensation

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8

Unless otherwise negotiated, USI says compensation for placing coverage is customarily a commission calculated as a percentage of premium and paid by the insurer. It may also receive additional monetary and non-monetary compensation from insurers or intermediaries (including affiliates), which can be contingent on volume, profitability, or other factors, and some agreements include growth or distribution incentives. Clients may request the nature and source of expected compensation, including on alternative quotes. Standard commission percentages and fee schedules for startup accounts are not published. 31
