Corgi vs
StartupInsurance.ai
Compare Corgi’s startup programs with StartupInsurance.ai’s contract-led brokerage when a customer specifies insurer requirements.
Introduction
A startup signing its first large customer may discover that buying the requested limit is only half the job: the contract also specifies the insurer. Corgi offers stage-based startup programs using affiliated and partner insurers; StartupInsurance.ai offers placement and policy review through ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. Compare the proposed insurer and contract wording before comparing package prices. 2 1 24

Key Differences Between Corgi and StartupInsurance.ai
The Insurer Requirement Comes Before the Package
Corgi’s public D&O description identifies Technology Risk Retention Group, while its broader disclosures allow affiliated and partner insurers. Corgi says TRRG has no AM Best rating and describes a separate route to rated admitted paper for eligible accounts. Those statements cannot be collapsed into a rating for every Corgi policy. Ask which route the proposal uses and whether the customer accepts it. 5 1
StartupInsurance.ai displays carrier brands, but the reviewed catalogue does not map each product to a legal issuer. Its review service can be a starting point for checking a customer’s requirements; the review itself is not insurer approval or proof the resulting placement satisfies that clause. 23 24
Funding Stage Versus the Actual Contract
Corgi organizes startup packages by funding stage. StartupInsurance.ai offers a review of existing policies alongside a customer contract, including AI exclusions. A funding round can help organize the initial discussion, but a software warranty or an unusual indemnity needs a wording-level answer. Give both teams the same agreement and request a list of requirements met, unmet and requiring negotiation. 2 24
Both describe technology or AI-related offerings. Corgi identifies a Tech & AI Liability module; StartupInsurance.ai’s AI-placement description leaves the issuer and form unresolved. Neither description is enough to assume a promised accuracy level or every AI-related allegation is insured. 8 23
Keep the Service Team Separate from the Risk Bearer
Corgi describes claims assistance and the possible use of affiliated or third-party administrators. StartupInsurance.ai’s reviewed sources do not establish a dedicated startup claims-reporting process. That is a difference in public documentation, not a finding about which team resolves claims better. Request the reporting contact and responsible insurer alongside the procurement documents. 1 27
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Contract acceptance: Which legal insurer, rating and regulatory status appear on each proposal, and has the customer accepted that combination? 1 23
- California placement: Confirm the product’s California route separately from either agency’s license disclosure. 4 26
- AI and D&O wording: Obtain the forms, defense-cost treatment and relevant exclusions rather than relying on a stage or technology label. 5 8 24
Service Comparison
Corgi vs StartupInsurance.ai: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Corgi | StartupInsurance.ai |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Corgi Insurance Services, Inc. is the licensed agency that sells and administers Corgi policies. The insurer named in your policy provides the coverage. 1,2,4 | StartupInsurance.ai identifies itself as a marketing brand of ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. ContractorNerd describes its role as an insurance agent or broker, not an insurer; it does not underwrite the policies. 24,27 ContractorNerd’s licensing page assigns quotes, binding and insurance transactions to ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC, with servicing supported by its licensed agents and partners. Its terms allow submissions through insurers and intermediaries. Confirm the producer-of-record arrangement for your StartupInsurance.ai placement. 26,27 |
| Access to insurers | Corgi uses affiliated and partner insurers. Your policy names the insurer and claims administrator for your coverage. 1 Technology Risk Retention Group, Inc. appears in the NAIC company listing as Arizona-domiciled property and casualty company code 17763 (listed as TECHNOLOGY RRG INC). Corgi’s disclaimers call TRRG the group’s primary underwriting entity and a risk retention group organized under the Liability Risk Retention Act. The same Carrier Financial Strength paragraph describes TRRG as federally chartered and operating under federal prudential oversight; that wording is company language and is not adopted here as a legal conclusion. 17,1,3,2,18,19 A risk retention group is a member-owned liability insurer licensed in its home state. Federal law lets it operate in other states through registration. Members must have similar or related business risks. 18,19,21 For customers who need an admitted insurer, Corgi says it can use affiliated or partner carriers rated A- or better by AM Best. Options depend on the state, coverage, and business. Eligible admitted policies may have state guaranty-association protection, subject to that state’s limits. 1,3,2,9 Corgi says Technology Risk Retention Group does not have an AM Best rating. A financial-strength rating and admitted status are separate things. 1,5 Corgi Insurance Company’s August 2026 launch announcement did not give a financial-strength rating or a complete list of licensed states. Confirm both if they are requirements for your business. 9,22 Policies issued by a risk retention group are not covered by state insurance guaranty funds. Corgi includes this notice for policies issued by Technology Risk Retention Group. 20,2,1 Corgi says its insurers may share risk with reinsurers, while the insurer on your policy remains responsible for claims. Its public disclosures do not name the current reinsurers or their contract terms. 1,14 | The homepage names Hartford, Chubb, Coalition, Tokio Marine HCC, Travelers and CNA. These brand references do not establish your issuing legal insurer, product access or policy terms. 23 |
| Availability | Corgi Insurance Services lists agency licenses in 49 states and Washington, D.C.; New Mexico is not listed. Product availability varies by state and is subject to underwriting approval. 4,2,1 Rhode Island’s 23 June 2026 list of registered risk retention groups includes Technology Risk Retention Group, Inc., NAIC 17763, at 425 Bush Street, San Francisco. A complete list of states where TRRG is registered was not found in the reviewed sources. 16 | ContractorNerd reports California property-and-casualty license 6015566 as active and says it is licensed in all 50 states. This is the agency’s own disclosure, not an independently verified regulator result. StartupInsurance.ai says availability varies by state, carrier and risk, with some surplus-lines placements; the reviewed sources do not establish a California route for every advertised product. 26,24 |
| Servicing and renewals | Corgi says customers can add or upgrade policies through its dashboard as they raise funding, hire, or sign larger contracts. Renewal and cancellation terms depend on the policy and state rules. 2,1 | The company offers a free review of existing policies and a customer contract, promising a written assessment of AI exclusions and contract gaps within 48 hours. That timing and the review’s completeness have not been independently tested. 24 The company advertises self-service certificates, centralized policy documents and renewal tracking. These operating services were not tested in an authenticated account. 23 |
