Coalition vs Cowbell

Compare Coalition and Cowbell for primary Tech E&O, excess cyber, security services and management-liability access.

Introduction

A technology company seeking both primary E&O and higher cyber limits has a more specific choice than two cyber brands. Cowbell markets Prime Tech and the separate Prime Tech Plus excess product; Coalition lists combined Tech E&O/cyber and excess options. Start by separating the primary policy from the additional layer above it. 34 35 1 14

Key Differences Between Coalition and Cowbell

An Excess Layer Must Match the Underlying Contract

Prime Tech combines non-admitted Technology E&O with cyber coverage for eligible technology businesses up to $1 billion in revenue and advertises limits up to $5 million. Prime Tech Plus is a separate follow-form excess Technology E&O and cyber product with up to $5 million in excess limits. 34,35

Coalition’s excess instructions call for underlying policy details and loss runs and say the primary insurer leads claims response. A higher aggregate limit therefore does not answer which wording responds first or which exclusions follow into the excess layer. Ask the broker to identify the attachment point and any differences from the primary form on both proposals. 14

Management Liability Uses a Different Access Route

Cowbell's U.S. management-liability offering is Zurich Select Plus, a modular product with private-company D&O, employment-practices, fiduciary and crime coverage options. Zurich says appointed Zurich E&S wholesalers access the Cowbell-powered platform; the target is private businesses under 250 employees and under $50 million in assets. 36,37

Coalition’s Executive Risks suite also lists D&O, employment practices, fiduciary and crime, but describes a different private/nonprofit appetite with higher published employee and asset thresholds. A company growing beyond the Select Plus target should seek a new eligibility answer rather than assume its cyber broker’s access covers every management product. Zurich’s investment in Cowbell does not establish that Zurich issues all Cowbell policies. 5 22

Compare the Security Work Your Team Will Actually Receive

Cowbell’s resiliency catalogue mixes complimentary services, trials and subscriptions. Coalition describes Control policyholder monitoring and alerts at no additional cost, with other security products promoted separately. Price the proposed service scope over the whole policy year and identify who implements the recommendations; the presence of a security platform is not evidence of fewer losses for your company. 40 8

What to Confirm in Quotes

Obtain the primary and excess insurer names, underlying-policy acceptance and claims-notice instructions for each layer. For management coverage, confirm wholesaler access and current size eligibility. Ask which security services end after a trial, require a subscription or need technical activation before they work. 35 37 40 14

Service Comparison

Coalition vs Cowbell: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoalitionCowbell
Application process

Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 13

Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 12

A U.S. buyer works through an insurance agent or broker. Cowbell provides a state-filtered agent directory, while appointed agents use Cowbell's platform to quote, bind and issue eligible products; no direct-to-buyer quote path was documented in the reviewed sources. 26,19,27,29

Access to insurers

Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 3,2

Cowbell's materials name Palomar Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 100 and Prime 100 Pro, Palomar and Chaucer Specialty Insurance Company for Prime 250, and Chaucer for Prime One. Prime Plus and Prime Tech Plus name only A-rated carrier paper, while the Select Plus page says Zurich admitted paper without naming the issuing legal entity. 29,30,31,32,33,35,36,25

Servicing and renewals

Coalition describes Control policyholder features at no additional cost, including attack-surface monitoring, vendor-risk monitoring, vulnerability alerts and guidance. Login Security requires connecting a Microsoft or Google environment. Additional security products are promoted separately. 8

Coalition says cyber renewals begin 90 days before expiration and follow Automatic, Express or Standard paths based on the account. Express renewals require responses; Standard renewals require a bind order and updated signed application, with additional underwriting conditions for some accounts. Automatic renewal does not guarantee an unchanged premium. 15

Cowbell describes continuous risk ratings, policyholder insights, security connectors, cybersecurity training and resiliency support alongside its cyber products. Some services are complimentary or limited to a trial or first policy year; managed detection, penetration testing, identity monitoring and compliance support also appear as subscription services for qualified customers. 40,29,33

Cowbell's FAQ directs policyholders to their agent for cancellation and directs agents to Cowbell for endorsements. It describes different renewal workflows: Prime 100 proposals are generated roughly 60 days before expiration, while Prime 250 requires a signed renewal application and underwriting review before a quote is released. 38

Claims assistance

Coalition describes in-house cyber claims triage and assistance attempting to recover stolen funds. Its Tech E&O page says the same claims team manages cyber and Tech E&O claims. These service descriptions do not establish response quality or payment of a particular loss. 9,1

Cowbell says its in-house cyber claims team and incident-response panel are available around the clock. Its public intake instructions ask for the policy number or company name, the incident date and details, and a point of contact; coverage and claim payment still depend on the issuing insurer and policy. 39,29,32
