Coalition vs Coterie Insurance

Compare Coterie’s small-business policies and cyber endorsement with Coalition’s cyber and technology coverage.

Introduction

For a small software or consulting business leasing its first office, premises insurance and liability for its work are separate buying questions. Coterie’s core products are a business owner’s policy (BOP), general liability and miscellaneous professional liability. Coalition’s technology offering combines Tech E&O with cyber insurance. The two may address different parts of the same program. 20 1

Key Differences Between Coalition and Coterie Insurance

An Agent Uses Both Routes, but for Different Products

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 19,24,37

Coalition also directs buyers through appointed brokers. Choosing between these names therefore need not mean changing the retail advisor: ask your agent which product they propose for each exposure and whether they can access the relevant route. No relationship between the two providers is established here. 13

A Cyber Endorsement Needs Its Own Comparison

Coterie markets cyber as an optional endorsement and describes specialty support through Cyberscout. Coalition describes cyber coverage with breach-response, extortion and business-interruption features, plus technology E&O for eligible businesses. Compare the endorsement’s limits, insured activities and response provisions with the proposed Coalition form; a cyber label alone does not establish equivalent protection for a software-delivery dispute. 33 29 7 1

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 23,25,32

That conflict is a reason to confirm the professional-liability product specifically, rather than extending a general nationwide statement to every line.

Fees Can Accumulate Across the Program

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 26

Coterie also discloses policy and payment-related fees. Coalition discloses producer commissions and possible incentives, without giving the cost of a particular startup’s placement. Ask for a consolidated proposal if purchasing both premises and digital-risk coverage; neither a small-business package nor a separate cyber policy establishes the total distribution cost. 26 4

What to Confirm in Quotes

Have the agent identify the base policy required for Coterie’s cyber endorsement, its limit and any technology-services restrictions. Obtain current MPL eligibility for every relevant state and the precise Coalition Tech E&O insurer and form. Finally, itemize policy fees, risk-program charges and compensation across the proposed purchases. 33 32 26 11

Service Comparison

Coalition vs Coterie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoalitionCoterie Insurance
Business role

Coalition combines commercial insurance offerings with cyber risk-management services. In the United States, Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CIS) is the disclosed insurance producer and surplus lines broker; the issuing insurer is responsible for policy obligations. 2,7

Coalition lists CIS’s California producer and surplus lines license as 0L76155. This is a company disclosure; current license status has not been independently checked with the California regulator. 2

Coalition’s legal page identifies Coalition Incident Response, Inc., doing business as Coalition Security, or independent third parties as security-service providers. Coalition Security does not provide insurance. 2

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 19,24,37

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 26,19,40,41

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 19,37,38,40

Application process

Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 13

Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 12

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 23,24,20

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 24,26

Availability

Coalition states that Executive Risks is available to private and nonprofit U.S. organizations in all states and Washington, D.C., with up to $500 million in assets, 1,000 employees and $500 million in plan assets, subject to limitations. 5

Coalition’s help center states that admitted and surplus cyber policies are offered in all 50 states and D.C., including California. Its product comparison lists Tech E&O and MPL under surplus coverage. This documents a California cyber placement route, but does not establish approval or the exact Tech E&O form for a particular applicant. 10,11

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 25,26,36

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 35,36

Fees and compensation

Coalition says independent producers typically receive commissions based on premium for new and renewed policies. Contingent commissions, placement incentives and compensation for certain cybersecurity sales may also apply. 4

Coalition says it retains part of earned premiums to fund operations and broker commissions and receives additional carrier payments based on the portfolio’s annual loss ratio. 16

The reviewed compensation disclosures do not state the commission percentage, broker fee or total premium for a particular startup quote. Obtain an itemized cost and compensation explanation from the placing broker. 4,16

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 26

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 26

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 27,26

Claims assistance

Coalition describes in-house cyber claims triage and assistance attempting to recover stolen funds. Its Tech E&O page says the same claims team manages cyber and Tech E&O claims. These service descriptions do not establish response quality or payment of a particular loss. 9,1

Coterie accepts standard and surplus-lines claim reports online and standard reports by phone. It asks for the policy number, named insured, loss date, event description and carrier name, then assigns a claims representative to investigate under the policy terms. 29,26

Coterie's policyholder page says its team will reach out around two business days after an online claim report, while the claims page says to expect contact within three to five business days. The claims page gives no standard settlement timeline. 28,29

Coterie directs cyber claim reports through its normal intake and says it works with Cyberscout on the investigation. Workplace-violence reports also start with Coterie before a specialty partner handles the response. These service descriptions do not establish that an event is covered. 29,33,34,26
