Alliance Risk vs
At-Bay
Comparing Alliance Risk and At-Bay when a software contract includes service credits and the company is considering managed cyber protection.
Introduction
A software vendor negotiating service credits for outages needs to understand the liability wording as well as the cybersecurity proposal. At-Bay’s technology E&O page expressly discusses service credits and combines professional liability with cyber protection. Alliance Risk offers contract-informed E&O review across specialist markets. This is a comparison between a particular product proposition and the broker work needed to test it against the vendor’s obligations. 13 10

Key Differences Between Alliance Risk and At-Bay
Test the Service-Credit Wording Against the Contract
At-Bay describes service credits issued to settle a claim as payable damages, subject to policy terms. That is not a promise to reimburse every routine customer credit or contractual performance guarantee. Alliance Risk asks for major client contracts and customer concentration as part of its technology submission. Ask the reviewing broker to identify the trigger, exclusions and treatment of credits in the actual form, including circumstances that fall outside a claim. 13 10
At-Bay’s current product appetite has broader ceilings than its broker-platform route. A quote that does not fit the online path is therefore not automatically outside every At-Bay option. Its accessible older appetite PDF also has different ceilings and restricted classes, including autonomous AI; the reviewed public documentation does not treat that document as current acceptance guidance. An AI-enabled vendor needs an underwriting answer tied to the current version. 13 17 23
Price the Security Agreement Separately
At-Bay Stance access is tied to an Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement. Optional managed detection and response is a separate purchase from At-Bay Security, LLC and is not required simply to buy insurance. Alliance Risk’s published review service does not establish an equivalent security subscription. Compare insurance premium, embedded services and optional monitoring costs as separate items. 18 10
For a company already using a managed security provider, ask whether services overlap, what integrations are required and whether any advertised credit or enhancement has qualifying conditions. A second monitoring contract is useful only if its duties and incident escalation are understood; product marketing alone does not establish that the company can retire an existing control.
Current Paper and Notice Matter More Than Historical Announcements
At-Bay’s 2023 announcement identifies its own specialty insurer for eligible new cyber and technology E&O business at that time. It does not establish the issuer on today’s California quote or the current MPL insurer. Alliance Risk’s carrier for this buyer is likewise not named in its general materials. Obtain the legal insurer, admitted or surplus-lines route and forms before comparing policy commitments. 22 15 1
At-Bay publishes an incident roadmap involving its claims team, breach coach and response partners. Alliance Risk’s public broker-claims scope remains unresolved. Clarify notice and consent requirements for an active cyber incident versus a non-cyber software claim; a service-credit dispute should not automatically be sent down the same operational path as ransomware. 19 20 7 3
What to Confirm in Quotes
- When do customer service credits count as covered damages, and what contract promises remain outside the form?
- Does the business fit current underwriting appetite or need manual review beyond the broker platform?
- What embedded fee, optional MDR agreement and broker charges apply, and which services duplicate existing security arrangements?
- Which current insurer accepts the California risk, and who receives cyber and non-cyber claim notices?
Service Comparison
Alliance Risk vs At-Bay: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Alliance Risk | At-Bay |
|---|---|---|
| Application process | The quote page starts with a contact request for company, website, contact details and a message. It advertises a free, no-obligation quote; the visible form does not provide a bindable offer. 6 For technology E&O, Alliance Risk requests service details, revenue, employee count, major client contracts, existing coverage, five-year claims history and customer concentration. It says it reviews the current program and approaches specialist carriers. 10 The general quote page advertises a quote within 24 hours, while the technology page gives 48–72 hours for standard software risks and five to ten business days for hardware, fintech, healthtech and AI. Treat timing as company estimates, not a binding deadline. 6,1 | At-Bay describes a broker workflow of completing an application, adjusting limits and retentions, reviewing documents, selecting an effective date, and satisfying contingencies and signature requirements before binding. Brokers can also email submissions to underwriting. An online quote is not itself bound coverage. 17,15 |
| Access to insurers | Alliance Risk reports using admitted and excess-and-surplus-lines markets for startups. The reviewed technology, quote and legal pages do not identify the insurer that would issue a California buyer’s policy. 1,6,3 | At-Bay announced in August 2023 that eligible new E&S Cyber and Tech E&O business would be quoted on At-Bay Specialty Insurance Company paper. That historical announcement does not identify the insurer on a current California quote or establish the issuer for MPL. 22 The current MPL product page does not name its issuing insurer. A September 2023 announcement names United Specialty Company for MPL, but that historical reference is insufficient to establish the current contracting insurer or California placement. 15,24 |
| Servicing and renewals | Alliance Risk offers a no-charge review of existing technology E&O policies, including gaps, retroactive dates and market alternatives. This is a company-described service, not evidence of review quality. 10 Alliance Risk advertises online program access and 24/7 support. Its contact page lists weekday telephone hours of 9am–6pm EST; an after-hours response commitment and renewal timetable were not established in those pages. 8,7 | At-Bay Stance offers vulnerability monitoring, fraud defense, employee security training and access to cyber advisors. Access is tied to the policy’s Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement; optional managed detection and response (MDR) is a separate purchase from At-Bay Security, LLC. 18 At-Bay markets Stance MDR for endpoints and email, plus managed extended detection and response (MXDR) spanning endpoint, email, identity and cloud. It says MDR is optional for insurance and available beyond its policyholders. Coverage enhancements and premium credits have qualifying conditions. 18 At-Bay describes broker dashboard access to active policies and renewals, with rapid and manual renewal paths. Its platform page says rapid renewals bind automatically 15 days before expiry; buyers should confirm enrollment, terms and change deadlines with their broker. 17 |
| Fees and compensation | Alliance Risk’s terms allow service, installment, cancellation and flat fees, and fees or commissions from insurers or other third parties. The terms do not state amounts or commission rates. A free quote does not establish free ongoing service. 3,6 | Stance access uses an Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement, while MDR is separately purchased. Security costs should be distinguished from the insurance premium and any broker charges. 18 Commission rates, broker compensation arrangements and a complete placement-fee schedule were not disclosed in the reviewed product, platform and US terms pages. This does not establish that commissions or fees are absent; request an itemized quote and compensation disclosure. 13,17,21 |
