What Is the NAIC Complaint Index?
What NAIC closed confirmed complaints and the complaint index count, and why they are not a complete service grade.
What the Figures Count
NAIC collects closed, confirmed complaints about insurance carriers from state insurance departments and shows them by state, company, and insurance type for the past three years.[1][2]
Use the index as one comparison factor, not the only one. An index can move because that company's complaints or premiums changed, or because the wider market for that type of insurance changed.[1]
What It Does Not Prove
These reports cover closed, confirmed complaint information supplied by state insurance departments; they are not a complete record of every complaint or outcome. A carrier report is not a complaint score for a named broker or managing general agent.[1][2]
Raw counts are not comparable across differently sized books without premium context.[1]
What to Confirm
Name the legal entity, insurance type, three-year window, and whether the figure is a count or an index. Use it as one sourced input, not as a claims-quality rating.[1]
