Professional Liability vs E&O: Are They Different?
Usually, the terms refer to the same broad type of coverage; the policy form and scheduled profession or services matter more than the label.
Texas DOI calls professional liability insurance “sometimes called errors and omissions.” III also uses E&O as another name for professional liability, while California DOI notes that professional liability can include E&O or medical-malpractice policies. In practice, product names may signal a specialty form, such as technology E&O, and wording varies by occupation, insurer, state, and endorsement. Compare the services insured, which entities and people qualify, the retroactive date, exclusions, claims reporting rules, defense-cost treatment, and limits. Do not infer that two quotes are equivalent because both say E&O, or that a general form covers a specialized profession such as medical, legal, or technology services.
Request declarations, complete forms, and endorsements for both quotes. Similar labels can hide differences in services, retroactive dates, defense terms, limits, or whether defense erodes the aggregate.
