Does Professional Liability Cover Bad Advice?
It can respond to a covered claim alleging that professional advice caused a client loss; the advice must relate to insured services.
Inaccurate advice is a classic professional-liability exposure: III identifies it as a claim type addressed by professional liability rather than ordinary general liability. The insurer still evaluates the actual contract and allegations. Advice may fall outside coverage if it is not within the professional services described in the application or declarations, or if an exclusion applies to the profession, promised result, intentional conduct, or prior-known matter. Some specialty occupations need a dedicated form. Check whether the policy schedules consulting, recommendations, implementation, and follow-up work separately, and whether defense costs reduce the limit. Also review how your contract allocates responsibility and whether the quote treats assumed liability more narrowly than negligence liability.
Compare the policy with recommendations you actually make, including written reports and informal guidance. Confirm whether advice to affiliates, overseas customers, or customers in regulated fields falls within scope.
