K&R vs. Cyber Insurance: What’s the Difference?
K&R focuses on defined kidnapping, extortion, and crisis events; cyber insurance addresses specified network, data, and ransomware losses.
The products can overlap when an extortion demand involves computer systems or data. Chubb’s K&R summary lists extortion-related coverage and response expenses; its cyber materials describe a ransomware endorsement that can tailor limits and retentions for ransomware losses. Their triggers and covered costs are not necessarily the same.
Compare the insured events, ransom terms, forensic and negotiation services, data recovery, business interruption, limits, retentions, and consent rules. Check other-insurance language and whether one policy’s response vendor must be used. Ask the broker to map a sample cyber extortion scenario to each issued form and identify which policy is expected to respond first.
