Does Inland Marine Cover Rented Equipment?
It can, but rented equipment may need a separate extension, schedule, or endorsement, and limits can be lower than owned equipment.
The illustrative AAIS contractors’ equipment form includes supplemental coverage for equipment leased or rented from others, subject to a separate limit. It also addresses the insured’s continuing lease payments after a covered loss separately. This demonstrates why “rented equipment is covered” can hide important distinctions: physical damage to the machine and continued rental charges are different exposures.
Before renting, compare the rental contract’s insurance and indemnity requirements with your policy. Check whether the item must be scheduled, whether the extension is active on the declarations, the maximum value per occurrence, transit and jobsite terms, and whether your deductible applies. Ask whether rented-in equipment is covered for theft, and whether damage to equipment you rent out is excluded.
