Does General Liability Cover Work From Home?
It can cover certain third-party liability from business operations at a home, but it does not automatically insure the home, personal belongings, or employee injuries.
CGL can cover covered bodily injury or property damage liability arising from business operations, but an at-home business should confirm that its home-based activity and premises are accurately described. CGL itself contains exclusions and insured-location wording that can matter. The fact that work occurs remotely does not make a claim automatically covered or excluded, and the form is not a promise to insure the home or personal belongings.
Separate the exposures: a visitor injury, damage to a customer’s property, theft of business equipment, and an employee’s work injury may involve different forms. Tell the broker about customer visits, stored inventory, deliveries, signage, and equipment at home. Check the CGL declarations and premises coverage, commercial property or home-business endorsements, and workers’ compensation arrangements. Review any homeowners contract as well, so the business use and property at the residence are described and addressed under the appropriate policy.
