Does General Liability Cover Independent Contractors?

Not automatically. A contractor may be covered only if the policy’s insured definition or an endorsement grants that status; otherwise, check the contractor’s own policy and contract.

Independent-contractor status by itself does not decide who is insured under a CGL policy. The ISO specimen names particular entities, employees, volunteer workers, and other defined roles; it does not provide blanket insured status to every independent contractor doing business for the policyholder. An endorsement or a different form may extend coverage, but the scope and conditions need to be read.

For a project, review the written agreement for insurance requirements and ask for the relevant policy and endorsements from each party. Confirm the named insured, additional-insured wording, limits, and whether coverage applies to the specific operations or completed work. The contractor’s role and legal classification can also matter under state rules. Do not infer coverage from the label “independent contractor” or from a certificate that does not show the operative endorsement.
