EPLI vs. General Liability: How Do They Differ?

EPLI addresses defined employment allegations; general liability typically addresses third-party bodily injury, property damage, and certain advertising injury.

Commercial general liability and EPLI are separate coverage categories. Triple-I describes CGL as protection for liability involving bodily injury, property damage, and certain personal or advertising injury; its EPLI guidance says employment-practices liability is generally outside CGL and can be separately purchased or endorsed. A BOP or commercial package may bundle coverages without making their purposes interchangeable. Compare the CGL employment-related exclusions, any EPL endorsement, and each line’s limits, retentions, insureds, and defense terms. If a customer, employee, or applicant alleges harm, the claim’s facts and policy definitions determine which coverage may apply; the policy names alone cannot settle that question.
