Does Commercial Umbrella Cover Commercial Auto?

It may, if the commercial auto policy is included as underlying insurance and the auto claim is covered by the umbrella wording.

Auto liability can be scheduled under a commercial umbrella. Triple-I specifically notes that an umbrella’s auto response depends on the auto liability policy being listed as underlying; California also identifies commercial auto as a possible covered underlying line. An umbrella limit should not be assumed to apply to every vehicle or auto use.

The primary auto policy, vehicle type, driver, and use still matter. The umbrella may require minimum auto limits, exclude certain vehicle classes or operations, or apply separate terms. Physical damage to the insured vehicle is not the same as third-party auto liability and is not ordinarily what an umbrella limit addresses.

Read the umbrella schedule and compare it with the auto declarations. Confirm the named insureds, covered-auto symbols, limit requirements, business uses, driver exceptions, and any exclusions for delivery, hired vehicles, or transportation for a fee.
