Does Commercial Auto Insurance Cover Rented or Rental Cars?

It may cover liability for a rented auto when hired-auto coverage is included. Damage to the rental car itself is separate and depends on physical-damage terms or other protection.

A business auto policy can distinguish liability from physical damage. California guidance says hired-auto coverage can be selected, and an illustrative ISO form defines covered autos according to the symbols shown for each coverage. Hired-auto liability therefore does not, by itself, establish that the rental vehicle is insured against collision, theft, or other damage.

The rental agreement may make the business or driver responsible for damage, loss of use, or other charges. An ISO business auto form may treat certain rental-contract liability as an insured contract, but it also has an exception for damage to the rented auto itself; the exact policy form and endorsements matter.

Before renting, check whether the business auto declarations include hired autos for liability and physical damage, the deductible, territorial limits, and any exclusions for long-term rentals or certain vehicle classes. Review the rental agreement and do not infer coverage from a certificate.
