Does HNOA Cover Rental Cars?

HNOA may include liability for business rentals when hired-auto coverage applies. Damage to the rental car itself usually requires separate physical-damage terms or other protection.

Hired-auto liability can respond to claims that the business is legally responsible for injury or damage caused while using a rented car, subject to the policy. California’s guide lists hired autos as an available business auto category. The label “HNOA” alone does not reveal whether the quote includes both hired and non-owned autos or what classes of rentals qualify.

The rental company may hold the renter responsible for damage to its vehicle. The illustrative ISO auto form defines covered autos by coverage symbol and distinguishes liability from physical damage. A business should not assume HNOA pays the rental company’s repair bill, loss-of-use charge, or other contract amount.

Check the declarations for hired-auto liability and physical damage, the deductible, vehicle-class and territory restrictions, and whether the rental is in the business’s name. Read the rental agreement and ask whether the policy covers employees who rent while traveling for work.
