Does Commercial Property Cover Inventory?

Usually, if inventory is insured as business personal property at a covered location and the loss comes from a covered cause.

Inventory is commonly insured as business personal property, but the policy’s scheduled values, locations, and valuation terms matter. Stock may be valued at cost, selling price, or another defined basis, and seasonal inventory can exceed a standard limit. Spoilage from temperature changes or a power interruption may require special coverage even when physical damage to stock is insured for other causes.

Compare the inventory limit with peak and average stock values, and check whether goods at temporary sites, in storage, or in transit are included. Review the valuation clause, seasonal increase or peak-season endorsement, spoilage coverage, deductible, and coinsurance provision. Keep current inventory records and ask how business interruption applies to lost sales after a covered stock loss.
