Does Commercial Property Cover Equipment and Computers?

Often, equipment and computers can be insured as business personal property, but limits, location, breakdown, and transit terms matter.

Movable equipment and computers are common business-property exposures, though the policy must insure the relevant property and location. A premises policy may respond to covered physical damage at a listed site but provide limited protection when devices are taken off site or moved in transit. Mechanical or electrical breakdown is a separate issue from damage caused by an insured peril and may require equipment-breakdown coverage.

Check the business-personal-property schedule, any computer or electronic-data sublimits, and terms for property away from premises, employee custody, and transit. Compare replacement cost with actual cash value and include realistic replacement values. For specialized or mobile equipment, ask whether an inland-marine floater is more appropriate; for breakdown, look for a separate endorsement.
