Do I Need Hired and Non-Owned Auto Insurance?

Consider HNOA if employees use personal vehicles for work or the business rents or borrows vehicles. Whether it is appropriate depends on the exposure and existing policy terms.

A business can face liability allegations after an employee causes an accident while making a work trip, even though the company does not own the car. HNOA is designed to address that business exposure in some policies. California’s guide says hired and non-owned auto coverage may be included in a Business Auto Policy based on coverage purchased; the endorsement controls which situations count.

A business with no work driving may have little HNOA exposure, while occasional errands, client visits, rental cars, or staff travel can create one. HNOA should not be treated as the employee’s auto policy or as physical damage protection for a rented or personal vehicle.

Inventory who drives, vehicle ownership, rental frequency, and trip purpose. Ask whether the business’s general liability policy excludes auto claims and request the HNOA endorsement wording, limits, deductible or retention, and any exclusions for delivery, passenger transport, or long-term rentals.
