Do I Need Commercial Auto Insurance?
Often, if your business owns vehicles or regularly uses vehicles in operations, you should assess a business auto policy. The needed coverages depend on who owns and drives each vehicle.
A business auto policy can address liability from autos used in the business and damage to covered autos. A California regulator describes options for business, personal, hired, and non-owned autos, with coverage applied by vehicle and coverage selection. That means the business-use label alone does not determine whether a particular vehicle or loss is insured.
A sole owner occasionally using a personal car may have a different exposure from a company with titled vans, field staff, or deliveries. A personal policy may allow some work use, but may not protect the business entity. Legal mandates, lease terms, and customer contracts can also affect what you must carry.
List vehicle owners, regular drivers, business use, locations, and annual mileage when seeking quotes. Check the declarations for the named insured, covered-auto symbols, liability limits, and whether collision or comprehensive is selected for each vehicle.
