When Do I Need Commercial Auto Insurance?

Review commercial auto before business vehicle use begins, and whenever ownership, drivers, routes, or the work performed changes.

A business auto policy is worth reviewing when a vehicle is titled to the business, carries employees or tools, makes regular job-site trips, or is used to transport goods. These are exposure indicators rather than automatic legal triggers: state rules, the vehicle, and the contract determine required insurance. California guidance notes that business auto exposures can be more complex than personal auto and that coverage may be assigned separately to each scheduled auto.

Do not wait for renewal if you buy a vehicle, add a driver, begin delivery work, or materially change how a vehicle is used. A policy may have notice conditions for newly acquired vehicles, and the illustrative ISO form treats coverage differently depending on the covered-auto symbol shown in the declarations.

Before the first trip under a new arrangement, ask the insurer or broker to confirm in writing which policy responds, who is an insured, and whether liability and physical damage are both included.
