Does Builders Risk Cover Debris Removal?
Often, debris removal is an additional coverage after covered physical damage, but it has reporting rules and limits.
The ISO specimen pays certain expenses to remove debris of covered property after a covered cause of loss, requires written notice within a stated period, and applies a formula and cap. It excludes costs to remove pollutants from land or water. Read whether the debris allowance sits within or above the property limit, how the formula is calculated, and whether demolition of undamaged property qualifies. Check notice deadlines and whether cleanup of contaminated soil, neighboring property, or non-insured debris requires separate environmental coverage. A demolition or hauling contractor may have responsibility under its work contract, but that does not expand the insurer’s debris-removal allowance. Keep invoices and report the expense by the form’s deadline. Confirm whether the limit is inside the building limit, the percentage formula and extra amount, and whether debris from undamaged property or pollutants is excluded.
