Heffernan Insurance Brokers vs Hiscox

Heffernan describes itself as an insurance broker and risk manager that shops markets, presents options, and places coverage with insurance carriers. It is not identified in the reviewed pages as the insurer that issues or pays claims on a buyer’s policy. Privacy language says it may share underwriting information with non-affiliated parties to solicit quotations from insurance carriers. ^6,9,5,1

Public pages and a 26 August 2026 company release use the name Heffernan Insurance Brokers and display California license number 0564249. They identify F. Michael Heffernan as President and CEO. The reviewed official pages do not print a longer corporate legal name such as an “Inc.” suffix. Confirm the contracting producer name on the engagement agreement and policy. ^1,24,2

Heffernan’s current site says it has been independent and employee-owned since 1988. A 2019 SkyKnight Capital announcement described a minority investment that recapitalized Heffernan’s ESOP while management said the firm would retain a culture of employee ownership. Heffernan Network Insurance Brokers is described as a wholly owned subsidiary, formerly OLI Insurance Services, that acquires or partners with independent agencies. Website terms identify Hiscox Inc., a Delaware corporation headquartered in Atlanta, as a licensed insurance intermediary for admitted and surplus-lines business. About Hiscox US names Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. (NAIC 10200) as the affiliated insurer and Hiscox Inc. as its general agent. Broker-only pages are restricted to licensed market professionals; the small-business section is the consumer product path. ^31,30

For buyers trying to control total cost of risk, Heffernan describes loss-sensitive and alternative arrangements including self-insurance, partial self-insurance, large deductibles, and captives. Hiscox directly markets and offers online quotes for general liability, professional liability (errors and omissions), cyber security insurance and a business owner’s policy that combines general liability with commercial property. Hiscox says eligible buyers can get a small-business quote online by entering a zip code and answering questions, and that general liability, professional liability, cyber and BOP are offered online. Licensed advisors are available by phone at posted Eastern Time hours. The general-liability FAQ says that after the application is completed, the policy is issued by email and a certificate appears in welcome documents. These are company-described steps; eligibility and binding conditions require confirmation on the actual application. ^42,33,27

Heffernan describes full-service claims consulting from intake through resolution, including workers’ compensation strategy, carrier liaison, and experience-mod analysis; 24/7 medical triage; and advocacy on general liability, auto, and property claims, including litigation support. The marine-cargo program separately describes a claims division with authority to adjust, settle, and issue payments on that program. These statements document claimed assistance. They do not establish that a claim will be paid or that reported speed or savings figures are independently verified. ^10,16

Hiscox says customers can start a claim online, by phone or by mail. The claims center lists 1-866-424-8508 with weekday and weekend Eastern hours; a professional-liability FAQ separately tells current customers that 866-424-8508 is open 24 hours a day. Hiscox says it assigns a specialized claims professional, validates coverage and may appoint an attorney for covered liability claims. Policies placed with Hartford, GEICO, NOW Insurance, Markel/Thimble or CyberPolicy markets may use different notice instructions. These statements describe a reporting process, not independently measured claims outcomes. ^43,53,33

A public fee schedule, commission percentage, or premium range for Heffernan’s ordinary business-insurance or technology brokerage was not found on the reviewed homepage, business, technology, contact, privacy, or Quick Insure pages. Request an account-specific disclosure of brokerage fees, insurer commissions, contingent or supplemental compensation, and any separately billed services. Hiscox’s general-liability FAQ says buyers may pay annually or monthly with no additional fees, using debit or credit card.
