At-Bay vs StartupInsurance.ai

Compare At-Bay’s technology E&O and separately priced security services with StartupInsurance.ai’s contract-focused brokerage for an AI vendor.

Introduction

An AI vendor can receive two different requests from a customer: insure its technology obligations and improve its security operations. At-Bay combines specialist insurance with security offerings; StartupInsurance.ai offers brokerage placement and policy-and-contract review. Compare the insurance wording and the security purchase separately so one does not stand in for the other. 1 7 15

Key Differences Between at-Bay and StartupInsurance.ai

Contractual Technology Promises Need the Proposed Form

At-Bay’s technology E&O page describes combined professional and cyber protection, including customer contractual indemnity and certain service credits used to settle claims. These are product highlights subject to wording, not blanket acceptance of every promise in an enterprise agreement. StartupInsurance.ai’s review of contract gaps can help frame that question, but its catalogue does not supply a form-level answer. 2 15

An older At-Bay appetite guide lists restricted classes including autonomous AI and differs from current headline appetite. Do not use that older guide as either a current rejection or proof that the restriction was removed. Send underwriting a precise description of the system’s autonomy and request current class acceptance. 12 2

Security Is a Separate Cost and Contract

At-Bay ties Stance access to an Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement; optional managed detection and response is purchased separately from At-Bay Security, LLC. It is not accurate to label the entire security offering free or mandatory. StartupInsurance.ai’s disclosed services concern policy review and administration, with possible agency charges under ContractorNerd’s disclosure. 7 14 19

Ask which controls are underwriting conditions, which services are included for the quoted fee and which subscriptions are optional. A team that already buys managed security should compare the proposed service scope before paying for overlapping functions. 7

Broker Access and Renewal Approval Remain Necessary

At-Bay’s platform is a broker workflow with document review, contingencies and signature requirements. Its historical own-paper announcement does not establish the issuer of a current California quote. StartupInsurance.ai’s agency disclosure likewise does not establish access to At-Bay; the relationship must be confirmed rather than inferred from overlapping products. 6 11 18

At-Bay describes rapid renewals that can bind automatically before expiry. Confirm which path applies and when changes must be supplied, particularly if the AI product’s capabilities have expanded since inception. 6

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Current appetite: Which autonomous functions and contractual promises has underwriting accepted? 2 12
  • Itemized cost: Separate premium, embedded security, optional MDR and producer charges. 7 19
  • Authority and timing: Obtain the California issuer, broker access, renewal enrollment and final change deadline. 5 6

Service Comparison

At-Bay vs StartupInsurance.ai: documented services and availability

CriteriaAt-BayStartupInsurance.ai
Business role

At-Bay offers cyber, technology errors and omissions (Tech E&O), and miscellaneous professional liability insurance. Its disclosed producer, At-Bay Insurance Services LLC, is a property and casualty agency and surplus lines broker; its website says coverage is underwritten by non-admitted insurers. 1,5

StartupInsurance.ai identifies itself as a marketing brand of ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC. ContractorNerd describes its role as an insurance agent or broker, not an insurer; it does not underwrite the policies. 15,18

ContractorNerd’s licensing page assigns quotes, binding and insurance transactions to ContractorNerd Insurance Services, LLC, with servicing supported by its licensed agents and partners. Its terms allow submissions through insurers and intermediaries. Confirm the producer-of-record arrangement for your StartupInsurance.ai placement. 17,18

Application process

At-Bay describes a broker workflow of completing an application, adjusting limits and retentions, reviewing documents, selecting an effective date, and satisfying contingencies and signature requirements before binding. Brokers can also email submissions to underwriting. An online quote is not itself bound coverage. 6,4

The online intake starts with coverage choices and shows subsequent sections for company details, financials, employees, claims, existing insurance and signature. Its initial choices are D&O, cyber, technology E&O, employment practices, fiduciary, crime and general liability. Only the public starting screen was inspected; quote delivery and binding were not tested. 16

Availability

At-Bay lists California P&C and surplus-lines license number 0L73812 for At-Bay Insurance Services LLC. This is a company disclosure, not an independently checked California Department of Insurance record or confirmation that a particular product is available. 5

The reviewed product and licensing pages do not establish current California eligibility for a specific startup, product and issuing insurer. At-Bay warns that products may not be available in every state, and MPL has state restrictions; obtain California placement confirmation through the broker. 5,2,3,4

ContractorNerd reports California property-and-casualty license 6015566 as active and says it is licensed in all 50 states. This is the agency’s own disclosure, not an independently verified regulator result. StartupInsurance.ai says availability varies by state, carrier and risk, with some surplus-lines placements; the reviewed sources do not establish a California route for every advertised product. 17,15

Servicing and renewals

At-Bay Stance offers vulnerability monitoring, fraud defense, employee security training and access to cyber advisors. Access is tied to the policy’s Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement; optional managed detection and response (MDR) is a separate purchase from At-Bay Security, LLC. 7

At-Bay markets Stance MDR for endpoints and email, plus managed extended detection and response (MXDR) spanning endpoint, email, identity and cloud. It says MDR is optional for insurance and available beyond its policyholders. Coverage enhancements and premium credits have qualifying conditions. 7

At-Bay describes broker dashboard access to active policies and renewals, with rapid and manual renewal paths. Its platform page says rapid renewals bind automatically 15 days before expiry; buyers should confirm enrollment, terms and change deadlines with their broker. 6

The company offers a free review of existing policies and a customer contract, promising a written assessment of AI exclusions and contract gaps within 48 hours. That timing and the review’s completeness have not been independently tested. 15

The company advertises self-service certificates, centralized policy documents and renewal tracking. These operating services were not tested in an authenticated account. 14

Fees and compensation

Stance access uses an Embedded Security Fee and Endorsement, while MDR is separately purchased. Security costs should be distinguished from the insurance premium and any broker charges. 7

Commission rates, broker compensation arrangements and a complete placement-fee schedule were not disclosed in the reviewed product, platform and US terms pages. This does not establish that commissions or fees are absent; request an itemized quote and compensation disclosure. 2,6,10

ContractorNerd discloses possible insurer/intermediary commissions, buyer-paid fees and contingent compensation. Fees can include platform, technology, policy-handling or consulting charges; not every charge applies to every policy. It says applicable fees are disclosed before binding or agreed before charging. A technology access fee, if charged, is generally non-refundable under its stated terms. Request the agreement and amounts applicable to your StartupInsurance.ai quote; the free review is not a promise of fee-free placement. 19
